It is hoped that the site, located at the Guangming Hi-Tech Park in Bao'an District, will have a production output valued at 100 billion yuan (US$12 billion) in five years' time.
Shenzhen is one of five cities designated by the Chinese government as industrial bases for semiconductor lighting (see China conference highlights LED industry developments ).
The three-square-kilometer site will receive an initial investment of 3 billion yuan, reaching 20 billion yuan in three to five years.
Its products will be applied to a variety of areas such as household lighting, auto and urban lighting, traffic lights and large displays.
Zhang Jing'an, a senior official with the Ministry of Science and Technology attending Monday's ceremony, said the State had approved the project in April, inspired by Shenzhen's leading LED semiconductor industry. With around 300 enterprises, Shenzhen's LED sector generated a total of 8 billion yuan in 2004.
Zhang urged Shenzhen to nurture more high-tech enterprises and experts, and strive to be a model for the country. It is the fourth state-sponsored base in Shenzhen – others support the software and IC industries.
Osram to develop LED business in China
German lighting company Osram is planning to produce LEDs in cooperation with an optoelectronics firm in Nanchang, capital of east China's Jiangxi Province, according to the People's Daily Online website.
An Osram spokesperson was unable to confirm the story.
The People's Daily Online said that Lais Johnson, president of Osram China, confirmed that Osram will launch a cooperation program with Jiangxi Lianchuang Science and Technology Optoelectronics Co., Ltd.
Osram will take the opportunity to further develop the Chinese market, introducing its LED technologies to more of China's mobile phone manufacturers and city illumination projects.
As one of the first four semiconductor lighting industry bases in China, Nanchang has a complete industrial chain of semiconductor products. Nanchang University is a leader in the research of semiconductor lighting materials.
