Pocket-Sized Light Measurement System Harnesses Smartphone Computing Power

Feb. 1, 2018

The WaveGo from Wave Illumination (www.waveillumination.com) offers simple yet accurate measurement for characterization of light sources. Paired with a smartphone app, the handheld device measures absolute irradiance, lux, color temperature, color rendering, TM30, Melanopic lux, and PAR. WaveGo’s compact size and connected data management make it an ideal solution for lighting designers, architects, occupational health professionals and building engineers to test and verify light source output.

Light has been shown to have significant impact on overall health, productivity, perception and mood, leading to a revolution coined “Human Centric Lighting”. Advances in lighting technology make it possible to select and adjust lighting that minimizes energy use, maximizes bulb lifetime, and creates specific color temperatures to influence visual impact. However, measurement is needed to verify that the desired light output had been achieved.

The WaveGo device uses a miniature spectrometer with 3 nm optical resolution to deliver highly accurate light measurement over the 350-800 nm wavelength range, from 1-1,000,000 lux. The intuitive smartphone app captures single and continuous measurements with one touch. Users can select any combination of absolute irradiance spectrum, lux, CRI (Ra, R1-15), Melanopic lux, and more for each measurement taken.

With virtually no learning curve, anyone can measure light source output in the workplace, retail environments, or museum and art installations. Results include a GPS location tag to easily track multiple measurement sites. Data can be saved locally, viewed and exported via email right on the phone. Cloud integration enables access to results from anywhere, due for release mid 2018.

In addition to human centric lighting design, the flexible WaveGo can be used in applications ranging from horticulture to testing and verification in lighting manufacture. To learn more about WaveGo, visit www.WaveIllumination.com, email [email protected], or call +44 1865 811 118.
