Osram Opto introduces ultra-small Oslon LED

May 5, 2009
The Oslon LED package measures just 3 x 3 mm and can produce up to 130 lm at 350 mA, in cool white.

Oslon LED for lighting Osram Opto Semiconductors has introduced a new power LED in a compact 3 x 3 mm package. The company says the new package offers high efficacy even at high currents as well as simplified thermal management, high reliability and a beam angle of 80 deg.C.

The Oslon LED is aimed at lighting applications, such as spotlights, desk lights and ceiling floodlights. “Its ability to handle high currents efficiently enables our customers to create particularly energy-efficient and cost-saving lighting solutions. The Oslon LED therefore has all the attributes to become the 'green' light source of the future,” said Gunnar Moos, SSL Marketing Manager at Osram Opto Semiconductors.

The Oslon has a low thermal resistance of 7 K/W, which simplifies thermal management, says Osram, while its small size gives designers the flexibility to create extremely sophisticated solutions. For very high luminous flux, several LEDs can be combined in a cluster.

In addition to ultra-white (5700 to 6500 K), the LED will be available this summer in neutral white and warm white, with color temperature in the range of 2700 to 4500 K.

At an operating current of 350 mA, the Oslon LED has a typical brightness of 110 lm in ultra-white (5700 and 6500 K), with a maximum possible luminous flux of 130 lm at present.

At an operating current of 350 mA and a color temperature of 3000 K it achieves a typical efficiency of 75 lm/W and a brightness of 85 lm. And brightness is an impressive 155 lm at an operating current of 700 mA (warm white).

The Oslon joins several other LEDs in which the package size is not much larger than the chip size (typically 1 x 1 mm). Lumileds introduced the Luxeon Rebel, with a package size of 4.5 x 3 mm, back in March 2007 – see news. In August 2008, Cree unveiled its XP package, measuring just 3.45 mm square and only 2 mm high – see news.
