PhotonStar LED Ltd expands, secures funding

A recent UK start-up is growing steadily as it seeks to develop high-quality LED luminaires.
PhotonStar LED Ltd, a UK-based designer and manufacturer of solid-state lighting luminaires, completed its second round of funding in April 2008, raising GBP250,000. The investment came from business angels, management and staff.

The company was founded in 2007 by James Mckenzie and Majd Zoorob with the aim of producing "world class" LED lighting products for general illumination.

PhotonStar LED Ltd made its product début at ARC 08 in February 2008, where it launched the first of its Performance Ecolighting products. The CeilingStar5 is a downlighter for use in fully insulated ceilings. It produces 490 lumens at thermal equilibrium from 11W of circuit power at a colour temperature of either 3200K or 3800K.

The recent round has allowed the company to expand and establish a production and prototyping facility. PhotonStar LED Ltd has also acquired the physical assets of Mesophotonics Lt, a UK company known for its photonic crystal technology.

This purchase gives PhotonStar a vast array of equipment, including an operational optical characterization lab able to handle LED technology from the LED die, through LED modules to the luminaire.

‘This investment and the subsequent acquisition of assets gives us a terrific head start in making world-class luminaire products’ says James Mckenzie, CEO of PhotonStar LED Ltd.

Mckenzie told LEDs Magazine that the company is using off-the-shelf LEDs and has no plans to make its own devices in the near future. The company is focusing on luminaire design, eliminating unnecessary secondary optics and addressing thermal issues. "Poor thermal management can ruin a perfectly good LED junction," said Mckenzie.
