IP and patent issues to feature at Blue 2005 in Taiwan

April 8, 2005

Intellectual property and patent issues are the hot topic in and around the solid state lighting (SSL) industry. IP and patent issues will take center stage as a special focus session during the upcoming 3rd annual "Blue" conference at the Ambassador Hotel in Hsinchu, Taiwan on May 16-18.

In 2004, Taiwan, China and Korea once again tripled their unit production of GaN LEDs, and now supply the majority of blue spectrum LEDs in the world. The major markets for HB-LEDs, from cellphones and LCD display backlighting, to end applications including the Solid State Lighting Revolution in China, are located in Asia. In addition, tremendous innovation is occurring in Asia, which is causing even more IP and patent discussion.

Keynote speakers at Blue 2005 include:
George Mueller, co-founder, Chairman and CEO of Color Kinetics an especially successful, publicly held company that has pioneered the intelligent design of HB-LEDs in end systems;
H.S. Chung who was Managing Director of Samsung/SEMCO;
Patricia Martone of Fish & Neave IP Group of the USA law firm, Ropes & Gray LLP;
Robert Steele of Strategies Unlimited, the foremost market research firm in the field of HB-LEDs.

Co-chairs for this prestigious industry event are: Yung-Sheng Liu, VP and General Director of the Opto-Electronics & Systems Laboratory of the Taiwan Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI); Tae-II Kim, president of the Korean Photonic Technology Institute (KOPTI); and Robert Walker, principal of YEBY Associates.
