LEDs Magazine 40 Under 40 Profile: Shivangi Arvind

July 24, 2020
AgEye's Shivangi Arvind is focused on bringing together artificial intelligence (AI) and agricultural technology (AgTech) systems for the future of farming.

Shivangi Arvind, PhD, delivered one of the most highly-rated presentations at our HortiCann Light + Tech Conference in October 2019 focused on “Truly Intelligent Farming.” Chief science officer Arvind and her engineering team at AgEye Technologies are developing what they call the Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) as a play on the ubiquitous Internet of Things acronym. She explained that intelligent farming needs much more than connectivity. The farms of the future will have autonomous capability driven by machine learning to make adaptations to controlled environment agriculture (CEA) operations.

Arvind has said that such a farm needs connected sensors to monitor the environment and also plant sensors that can allow autonomous systems to apply AI to control the growing environment. That autonomous capability combines, according to Arvind, with connected CEA systems including tunable LED lighting, environmental control, nutrient control, and more. This thought leadership and research has led her to speak globally at events and she was even invited by the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture to speak at the G20 Summit this year before it was canceled due to the novel coronavirus.

Arvind’s work is focused on higher yield of better plants while decreasing maintenance costs, crop losses, and the carbon footprint through technology. She earned a doctorate in horticultural science and plant physiology from G. B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology in India and was recognized as Young Scientist (Agriculture) by the Uttarakhand Council of Science and Technology during that doctoral program. She earned an undergraduate degree from the same university and a master’s in fruit science at the University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot.
