LEDs Magazine 40 Under 40 Profile: Michael Hennessy

July 24, 2020
Wavelength Lighting CEO Michael Hennessy has worked tirelessly to address the carbon footprint of buildings in New York City.

Michael Hennessy founded Wavelength Lighting in 2013 and set out to drastically change the efficiency of New York City’s buildings. Knowing that energy used by lighting makes up 20% of a building’s carbon footprint, he realized that small and effective changes to lighting systems could reduce that energy consumption by almost 90%.

The value proposition that Hennessy relentlessly pursues is front and center on the firm’s web homepage — massive ROI. Hennessy and his team have worked in the Big Apple with large commercial tenants including some of the city’s biggest financial firms, the Barclays Center Arena, and two major universities. He stresses not only efficient LED lighting but reasoned deployment of controls to compound the ROI, as he outlined in a contributed column about a year ago.

A colleague has described the evolution of Wavelength as in six years going from essentially a “door-to-door sales operation to a position as a top New York-based impactful and goal-oriented energy-efficient lighting company.”

Prior to founding his firm, Hennessy spent a decade as an analyst and investor in clean energy finance.
