LEDs Magazine News & Insights 29 January 2020 - Editor's Column

Jan. 29, 2020

Welcome to the LEDs Magazine News & Insights newsletter for Jan. 29, 2020. We see 2020 starting for real as February approaches. There was a brief flurry of activity in early January, but now things will truly get moving leading up to Strategies in Light. There is little more that I can say about that event that will simply have a fantastic program and offer equally compelling exhibits and networking opportunities.

Since our prior edition of this newsletter came your way, it appears ams has won approval to issue new shares to help pay for the Osram acquisition. That said, our Mark Halper, who has tirelessly followed this marathon, tells me there is yet more news brewing that he is trying to make sense of. Watch our site in the next day or two and we may have an update in our Friday newsletter.

We have a new story for you about a US Department of Energy sustainable luminaires contest. Brad Koerner, whom we consider one of our own, won the contest with his Bamboo Pendant luminaire design that combines energy efficiency and sustainability, in terms of materials, the manufacturing process, and the end-of-life recycling process. Koerner has spoken a number of times at Strategies in Light and is one of our Sapphire Awards judges.

We also posted a compelling office lighting project for you last week. The new TriHealth administrative office in Cincinnati has a compelling open design with natural light entering from floor-to-ceiling windows. The lighting design compels collaboration in so-called community zones.

By the time you read this, I’m hoping we can launch a new audience survey that will examine the state of our industry. At worst case, the survey will be available in a few days. It’s just over 20 questions and will take less than 15 minutes to complete. I’m hoping you will complete the survey so that I can share the results with you. I really would like insight into the state of the industry and to see if we have new perspective on the outlook.

Awards season is upon us. I watched the Grammys just the other night. Our LEDs Magazine Sapphire Awards won’t fill the Staples Center. But we may have a more spectacular venue aboard the historic aircraft carries Midway. I will warn seriously forget the formal wear and please leave the heels in the hotel room. Bring a moderate jacket. And prepare for a fabulous night out and the chance to cheer our winners.

You will find many more stories of interest in the body of today’s newsletter. Please note my relatively new email address below. And always feel free to contact me to discuss content we post or to pitch a contributed article.
