LEDs Magazine News & Insights 22 January 2020 - Editor's Column

Jan. 22, 2020

Welcome to the LEDs Magazine News & Insights newsletter for Jan. 22, 2020. Globally the industry has eyes on Davos, Switzerland and the World Economic Forum this week. The event has two connections to the LED and solid-state lighting (SS) sectors. Our industry Is looking for continued positive news on the trade front and of course the environmental slant of this year’s forum is inherently a good match for energy-efficient lighting.

Indeed, Signify used the forum to spotlight a recent project in which it renovated street lights in Davos and even donated SSL products to the Davos Congress Centre where the forum is ongoing. The energy savings are significant and Interact City Internet of Things (IoT) controls are in use.

Of course, the politics will be another story. Even as Eric Rondolat, CEO of Signify, explained how it is important to adopt energy-efficient technologies and the circular economy with concepts such as additive manufacturing, the US president proclaimed that the world has essentially unlimited energy supply from fossil fuels.

What our industries will be looking for, however, are indications that business is on more solid footing. It appears that the US and China have stepped back from the trade war. Hopefully, we will see more positive economic news this week.

Moving to product news, Osram Opto Semiconductors has started 2020 with a technology rush. Earlier we covered the company’s new color LEDs that could revolutionize the video projector market. Now the company has a new monochromatic hyper red LED that can deliver more PPF for horticultural applications and new phosphor-converted white LEDs for automotive headlamps.

Of course, I have to mention Strategies in Light. It’s both frightful and encouraging that it’s only a few weeks away. Have we dotted all the I’s and crossed all the T’s? What I know is that the program will be outstanding and the exhibits always offer great value. Our Carrie Meadows posted to our blog about the circadian and lighting for health content that will be vital to many attendees.

Don’t miss a chance to join us on the aircraft carrier Midway for our Sapphire Awards presented on the flight deck. You will get a top San Diego tourist venue, incredible views of the bay and skyline, tapas and drinks, and a chance to celebrate our winners. This will not just be an awards ceremony but an unforgettable night out.
