Chicago – May 1, 2023 – The renowned lighting design firm FMS and Focal Point, a vertically integrated manufacturer of architectural lighting and acoustic systems, are collaborating to offer visitors to North America’s premier lighting trade show and conference a reflective and immersive space along the theme of The Circular Economy. The Immersive Lighting Installations, an initiative of the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) in collaboration with LightFair, is a contest to promote Circular Economy principles in the lighting industry. Participating lighting design firms and manufacturers are challenged to create immersive experiences emphasizing economic, environmental, and social benefits. The contest encourages using renewable and recyclable materials by adopting circular design and manufacturing practices to minimize waste and maximize resource efficiency.

FMS and Focal Point invite attendees to enter a reflective and immersive place where ever-changing silhouettes of nature, crafted from repurposed recycled materials, frame your view into the play of color and light, creating a dazzling sensation of infinite space. Visitors can walk away with a piece of the installation made of repurposed production waste, further extending the material’s useful lifetime. The colorful PET felt material that Focal Point uses to build architectural acoustic solutions is composed of 50% post-consumer plastic waste. Through this exhibition, discontinued colors and production waste will find another identity through the installation and playful takeaways. Over the three days of LightFair 2023, visitors can return to watch the exhibit transform through public interaction.

“We are inviting the lighting design community to collectively ponder and participate in an initiative that champions sustainability by reducing waste and supporting the Circular Economy,” state the design teams of FMS and Focal Point. “Visitors will enter a space that creates a memorable experience, invites reflection, and conveys the message that, in the end, nothing should be left behind, if only an image, hence the title: The Image Left, Behind.”

Visitors will be encouraged to post their images and thoughts on how they can make choices that support a Circular Economy using the hashtag #TheImageLeftBehind.

Most components of the Immersive Experience will be made from manufacturing waste, such as scrap or discontinued materials, and following the event, every component will be repurposed or recycled.

The Immersive Lighting Installations will be located throughout the show floor for visitors to experience during LightFair, May 23-25, 2023, at the Javits Center in New York City.

Judges will select one winning manufacturer-designer team from the IALD based on their interpretation and response to the creative brief, the quality of the installation, and the design of the installation. The winning team will be announced at the IALD Designery on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at 5 pm.

The FMS and Focal Point team are thrilled with our creative, sustainably focused collaboration. We hope our Immersive Lighting Installation will inspire the judges to award the team Best Overall in the design contest. We are excited to be able to contribute to the ongoing evolution of thinking and discourse about the Circular Economy within the lighting industry.

Focal Point will also be exhibiting in booth 3218 and invites all to visit their booth, as well as the other independent lighting companies of Legrand and their Plug ‘n Pour Lounge, located next to the IALD Designery.
