Arborlight Names Michael McCorquodale as CEO

Silicon Valley serial entrepreneur returns to Michigan to develop Arborlight’s Daylight Emulation® lighting system for healthcare and myriad other markets

Ann Arbor, MI—The Board of Directors of Arborlight is pleased to announce the selection of Michael McCorquodale, Ph.D., as CEO.

Arborlight, a spin-off of the University of Michigan, offers the world's first lighting system that most closely matches natural daylight of any luminaire on the market. This Daylight Emulation® system is designed for a wide variety of applications, ranging from medical and architectural lighting to office environments and scientific apparatus. Replicating the effects of the sun on human circadian rhythms creates healthier, more productive environments.

Dr. McCorquodale returns to Michigan from California’s Silicon Valley where he founded and led several successful firms since 2004. In 2012, Electronic Engineering Times named him Innovator of the Year.

“Arborlight’s technology for daylight emulation is an important contribution to health and wellness in a variety of applications, and far exceeds that of any lighting technology on the market,” according to Dr. McCorquodale. “And I’m very excited to return to Metro Detroit to join its growing innovation community.”

The selection of Dr. McCorquodale as CEO reflects Arborlight’s focus on penetrating the multi-billion dollar healthcare and wellness lighting markets, among others. Arborlight is currently running pilot projects in patient rooms at three respected healthcare facilities.

Dr. McCorquodale started his first venture, Mobius Microsystems, while completing his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. (Mobius was later acquired by Integrated Device Technology.) Since then he has founded, led and advised numerous companies pioneering new technology applications. These include his role as CEO of Cortera Neurotechnologies, a medical device startup revolutionizing the treatment of neurological disorders. Before that, he was co-founder and COO of e-SENS, developing instruments for chemical sensing in potable water.

Dr. McCorquodale earned a B.S. in Engineering, with honors, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan.

He has received alumni achievement awards from both institutions. In addition, he is a Senior Member of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), and serves as a member of Board of Directors of Movellus Circuits, BritePlug, and on Advisory Boards to Sponsorbrite and Reveal Design Automation.
