The laser has been in commercial use for four decades, but the fiber laser now promises to be one of the most successful products to enter the market in years. It offers high power and low power operation, fiber delivery, excellent beam quality, and a robust, integrated design. Revenues for fiber lasers have now exceeded $100 million per year. But in the most attractive market segments, it must displace proven technology, such as gas CO2 lasers and solid-state lasers.
