DOE offers funds for SSL Product Development (Round 5)

May 13, 2008
The DOE is soliciting applications from industrial organizations for high-priority product development activities that will advance the state-of-the-art of SSL for general lighting applications.
The US Department of Energy (DOE) has released the Solid-State Lighting (SSL) Product Development (Round 5) funding opportunity. The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Building Technologies Program, is soliciting applications from industrial organizations for high-priority product development activities that will advance the state-of-the-art of SSL used for general lighting applications.

Information on the estimated total funding and expected number of awards is not available yet. The applications are due in June 27.

This release marks the fifth DOE SSL Product Development funding opportunity offered in a series expected to span a decade. Product Development projects are designed to develop or improve commercially viable materials, devices, or systems. Technical activities are to be focused on a targeted market application with fully defined price, efficacy, and other performance parameters necessary for success of the proposed product.

The funding opportunity web page lists six specific areas of interest:

  • LED Based Integrated Luminaire
  • High Efficiency LEDs or Arrays
  • Phosphors or Encapsulants
  • Electronics Development
  • OLED Lighting Panel
  • Low cost substrates and encapsulation for OLEDs
The Round 5 Core Technology funding opportunity was announced last week (see DOE offers up to $7.5 million in round 5 of SSL projects ).
