(April 23, 2013) – North American lighting leader OSRAM SYLVANIA is showcasing its portfolio of high-efficiency OSRAM QUICKTRONIC® electronic fluorescent ballasts that are designed to meet the new standards set by the Department of Energy (DOE) 2014 ruling. The QUICKTRONIC ballasts and other innovative lighting technologies from OSRAM SYLVANIA will be shown at Booth #1001 at LIGHTFAIR® International 2013, the world’s largest annual architectural and commercial lighting trade show and conference.“We are committed to delivering the technologies our customers need today to help them prepare for the future of lighting legislation,” said Naveen Tumula, product group marketing manager, OSRAM SYLVANIA. “Currently more than 98 percent of our QUICKTRONIC ballasts already comply with the DOE2014 ruling, as will our future designs.”The DOE 2014 ruling sets minimum performance criteria for fluorescent ballasts manufactured on or after November 14, 2014 that operate at an input voltage at or between 120 and 277 volts and at a line frequency of 60Hz. The ballasts must have a power factor greater than or equal to 0.90 for commercial applications and greater than or equal to 0.50 for residential applications. Residential ballasts must be designed, labeled and marketed only for use in residential applications and must meet further requirements outlined by FCC 47 CFR part 18. Sign ballasts must meet UL Type 2 rating requirements and be designed, labeled and marketed for use in outdoor signs. This rulemaking also establishes a new ballast efficiency measurement metric known as Ballast Luminous Efficiency (BLE). BLE is designed to use a purely electrical measure of power in and power out to determine efficacy avoiding the pitfall of the Ballast Efficiency Factor (BEF) that was dependent on the lumen output of the lamp.
