Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead selects Zeta for LED street light upgrade

Following a competitive tender process, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead awarded a £2.5 million contract for low-energy LED street lights to Bicester-based Zeta Specialist Lighting.

Zeta’s SmartScape Nano LED street light and SmartScape Heritage LED retro-fit solution for heritage lanterns, which are manufactured at the firm’s UK-based production facility, were deemed to be the most competitive and technologically advanced solution.

The contract win includes approximately 14,500 SmartScape Nano and Heritage street lights, as well as a number of other products including Zeta Bespoke Subway Kits and Zeta SignLites which will be deployed to illuminate road signs.

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead was looking to reduce its annual street lighting budget, by saving on maintenance costs and energy bills. Zeta’s solution will deliver a 70 per cent reduction in energy costs, slashing the bill from £650k to £200k per annum. This is because Zeta’s proprietary technology enables the Nano to runs as low as 12W compared to the legacy luminaries’ 50W energy requirement. The annual saving on maintenance is an additional £200k.

David Thompson, Commissioning & Contracts Lead, Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead said: “The new lights deliver superior illumination, require little or no maintenance and are much more energy efficient. In addition to the tangible cost savings, they will also help us to reduce our carbon footprint.”

Zeta is working in partnership with independent street lighting and signing installer AA Lighting to project manage the roll-out and is also conducting site surveys and creating lighting designs on a street by street basis. Work to install the new LED street lights across the Borough is well underway.

A rural residential area in Ascot was one of the first to benefit from the new solution and a number of residential streets in the town were next to see the lights swapped for low-energy LED ones. In the mostly residential, areas, the lights will turn on at dusk and will be dimmed from midnight.

Zeta has built two custom production lines in its Bicester manufacturing facility, invested in new test equipment and recruited ten additional staff to manage the project which is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
