The smart cities of our not-too-distant future will be enabled by the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies that are increasingly in our midst today. These technologies consist of systems that can be scaled to deliver the smart-city promise of new services, convenience and public safety, and smart buildings will be among the key building blocks for these cities of tomorrow. UL is pleased to be collaborating with the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) to help accelerate and support the development and implementation of these new technologies in buildings and the benefits they will bring to us all.

To start, UL and TIA are collaborating on an online learning management platform to support the smart building market. This platform will educate and inform stakeholders on the many different aspects of and solutions available for this emerging market. Exchanging commercial, technical and standardization insights helps TIA and UL develop a common vision for what is needed to accelerate the deployment of smart building – and smart city – technologies. This will also enrich the relevant standards and training needed for effective and safe implementation.

“This collaboration with TIA presents an opportunity to help advance societal well-being by helping to bring visibility to the value inherent in smart buildings and, ultimately, smart cities,” said Weifang Zhou, president of UL’s Connected Technologies business unit.
