SAN FRANCISCO – Enlighted, Inc., a leading technology innovator and provider of energy efficiency solutions, receives the 11th annual California Higher Education Energy Efficiency and Sustainability (CHESC) Best Practice Award in the lighting design/retrofit category for its application at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). This is the second year Enlighted and CSUDH are honored with this award.
“Partnering with CSUDH is a win-win-win for both organizations and the students,” said Zach Gentry, VP of business development at Enlighted. “We are able to not only provide the university with sustainable technology that reduces energy usage and unlocks the IoT, but in the process, CSUDH was able to teach the next generation of innovators - the students - about energy efficiency through hands-on implementation of our technology.”

CSUDH’s lighting project features updated LED lighting and Enlighted’s wireless smart sensors. Using the Enlighted smart sensors, the University can now identify occupied and unoccupied spaces, take advantage of daylight harvesting, and adjust light levels based on tasks to help reduce overall lighting energy use.
Results from the project include a 78 percent lighting energy savings in hallways, a 50 percent savings in offices and classrooms and demand-response control. The project is projected to achieve more than $56,000 in energy savings annually.
The university plans to continue applying the Enlighted technology across campus. For example, it has approximately a quarter-mile of underground tunnels that will be replaced with LED lighting and Enlighted smart sensors, as well as all of the lighting in the South Academic Complex 1 (SAC-1) and the office spaces in SAC-2. The university also plans to connect air-conditioning units in the buildings to the Enlighted system to reduce usage when fewer people are on campus, such as during spring and winter breaks.
“With the Enlighted system, I can adjust the light levels and task tune to individual’s needs. I can also tie the system into the HVAC to save energy when no one is in the space, especially for extended periods of time like semester breaks for vacation,” said Kenny Seeton, CSUDH Central Plant and energy manager. “And I can adjust the light levels right from my computer or iPad.”
Enlighted’s advanced system provides universities the opportunity to maintain energy efficiency as campus usage evolves during the academic calendar. The technology also offers the opportunity to regulate multiple facilities from one computer; collects big data to help better increase energy savings and enhances space utilization; and extends to other building management systems like HVAC, safety and security, and more.
The annual CHESC Best Practice Awards highlight sustainable and energy efficiency achievements California university campuses have made through innovative projects and operations. Winners are recognized during the California Higher Education Sustainability Conference hosted by San Francisco State University from July 20-24, 2015.
