LightTools 5.4 delivers enhanced modeling and optimization capabilities

Jan. 11, 2007
Date Announced: 11 Jan 2007 The latest version of LightTools(R), the popular illumination design and analysis software from Optical Research Associates (ORA®), delivers sophisticated new capabilities for modeling surface textures, as well as key improvements to its powerful optimization engine. Specifically, LightTools Version 5.4 introduces a surface texture feature that enables the user to create an arbitrary geometrical object and then produce surfaces in which the object is positioned repeatedly in a variable pattern. The texture objects can be individually moved, rotated, and scaled within the pattern, and these parameters can be automatically refined using the LightTools Optimization Module. This advanced texture modeling and optimization capability is particularly useful for designing critical components of LCD backlights, micro lens arrays, digital micromirror device (DMD) projection systems, and light pipe components. In addition, two new merit functions enhance the LightTools Optimization Module for many common illumination applications. The Focus Merit Function facilitates the optimization of optical system illuminance at a specified receiver location, and the Collimate Merit Function makes it easier to maximize light intensity projected in a given direction. Additionally, improvements to the optimization algorithms can produce faster convergence results and increase the user’s optimization solution success rate. LightTools 5.4 also offers improved data exchange with CAD/CAM programs by adding support for the CATIA V5 file format. With over 40 years of success as an industry leader, Optical Research Associates (ORA) is committed to delivering innovative solutions to the optics industry. With its CODE V® and LightTools software products, ORA is the world’s leading developer of optical software. ORA is also the largest independent supplier of optical design and engineering services, with more than 4,000 completed projects since the company was founded in 1963.LightTools and ORA are registered trademarks of Optical Research Associates. CATIA is a registered trademark of Dassault Systemes.
