Osram Sylvania reports DOE collaboration project outcomes

May 12, 2010
Date Announced: 12 May 2010 Las Vegas and Danvers, Mass. -– Committed to the development of sustainable solid-state lighting (SSL) solutions for the U.S. market, OSRAM SYLVANIA and the Department of Energy (DOE) are partnering to develop new LED lighting solutions. Combined with OSRAM SYLVANIA’s multimillion-dollar investments in LED technology research and development, recognition and funding support from the DOE has accelerated American SSL innovation. Today, OSRAM SYLVANIA unveiled the result of one of its recent collaborations with the DOE, a high efficiency downlight system. Initiated in July 2008, the objective of the project was to maximize downlight luminaire performance with an optimized system design. The system utilizes remote phosphor LED technology to deliver the most usable warm-white light possible. The project team developed a customized LED module, driver, optics, and thermal management solution to create a high quality downlight luminaire with 73 percent overall system efficiency. In January 2010, the DOE awarded funding to OSRAM SYLVANIA for SSL Product Development under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. With this project, OSRAM SYLVANIA is exploring a high-flux commercial illumination solution to create a replacement solution for fluorescent luminaires. The lighting system will consist of intelligent control electronics, linear LED modules, and a power supply, all enclosed in a metal housing. The intelligent controls will be designed to sense occupancy and ambient lighting conditions, with the ability to switch or dim the lighting fixture to garner additional energy savings. Currently, this level of intelligence in a control system is not possible without significantly downgrading fluorescent lamp performance. By creating a long-life LED solution, OSRAM SYLVANIA projects installation of such a lighting system solution would pay for itself within several years of use. This research project is in its first phase and is expected to be in development by spring of 2012. OSRAM SYLVANIA is also in the research stages of another project that received an award from the DOE in March 2009. This project aims to develop a small form factor, MR16 shaped LED retrofit lamp consisting of a light engine, optics, drive electronics and thermal management for incandescent or halogen replacements in both commercial and residential applications. Traditional MR16 lamps are widely used today in a variety of commercial and residential lighting applications. Development of an LED MR16 replacement represents one of the largest opportunities to expand SSL technology adoption. Development of the OSRAM SYLVANIA LED MR16 project is slated to begin by summer 2011.
