High-current LED for brighter projectors

June 15, 2010
Date Announced: 15 Jun 2010 Hong Kong - The new OSTAR Compact from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is characterized by even better high-current capability and lower thermal resistance. It can handle up to 6 A in pulsed mode which is ideal for pico and pocket projectors for small mobile terminals. Depending on the design of small projectors these high-power LEDs can provide a real brightness boost. The new OSTAR Compact offers more light output, and with a mere 3.9 mm x 3.6 mm it is accommodated in the same package as the previous version. Thus small projectors can be designed for more brightness without increasing their size. Instead of 4 A, the new LED can now be pulsed with 6 A, and it achieves 350 lm in amber, 600 lm in green and 165 lm in blue in pulsed mode (typically 120 Hz, 2 ms, Ts= 25°C). Thanks to a new package material its thermal resistance has been reduced to 3 K/W compared to 6 K/W of the old version As a result, heat can be dissipated more efficiently. The enhanced performance of the high-power LED is achieved by a 2 mm² chip that benefits from improved epitaxy processes and from a more even power distribution via additional bond wires. “This enabled us to design the compact LED for even higher current handling capacity”, says Wolfgang Schnabel, Marketing Manager Projection at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. “Our new OSTAR Compact offers higher luminous power for small projector designs. The devices remain small in size, but gain a lot in brightness.”The new LED wit the high current capability extends the portfolio of OSTAR Compact LEDs for projection applications. The portfolio also includes LEDs with chips with an edge length of 750 µm, and LEDs with 1 mm² chips in all colors.
