Stanyl for LED lighting applications in harsh environments

Sept. 21, 2010
Date Announced: 21 Sep 2010 Stanyl® PA46 was selected by AVX Corporation for a new robust and reliable connection system for use in high reliability and harsh environments for wire-to-board applications. This is a new application for Stanyl in the emerging Solid State Lighting market. The 9176 Series of surface mount Insulation Displacement Connectors (IDC) were originally developed for the rugged automotive and industrial market applications. This industry proven contact system is approved to automotive levels for shock, vibration, and temperature cycling, further underlining its reliability. This IDC connector system provides a “gas tight” termination of a discrete wire to the PCB. The insulator housing provides the necessary strain relief on the wire to protect it from extreme mechanical and environment conditions. Operating temperature is -40ºC to +125ºC.The insulators for the 9176 Series devices are made from UL94-V0 Stanyl PA 46 from DSM Engineering Plastics. According to Tom Anderson, Product Manager at AVX Corporation says: “Our new 9176 Series connector system reduces total applied cost when compared to either soldering or crimping while providing a reliable, repeatable and repairable process. This requires a high stiffness at high temperatures (260ºC) to enables the SMT (Surface Mount Technology) soldering.” Rui Zhang at DSM Engineering Plastics says: “Stanyl has a well-established and proven track record for robust and reliable connections. It offers high flexibility and stiffness and is suitable for a 260ºC reflow soldering process. In this application, Stanyl offers an excellent UL 94 V0 solution.”AVX AVX Corporation is a leading international supplier of electronic passive components and interconnect solutions with 24 manufacturing and customer support facilities in 15 countries around the world.
