iGuzzini illuminazione to introduce Archilede LED street-lighting system to US in September 2010

Sept. 2, 2010
Date Announced: 02 Sep 2010 New York, NY, August 31, 2010 - iGuzzini illuminazione, Italy's leading manufacturer of high-end architectural lighting, will introduce its new Archilede LED street-lighting system to the U.S. market beginning in September 2010, with the complete line becoming available here by December 2010. Developed together with the Italian energy provider, ENEL Sole, the Archilede street light makes it possible to significantly improve the sustainability of outdoor public spaces. The product combines innovative optics and intelligent electronics to dramatically reduce light pollution and energy usage, while lowering operating costs and achieving better lighting performance than most traditional light sources. The innovative LED lighting system, which will be sold exclusively in the U.S. though iGuzzini’s newly opened New York showroom, saves more than 40% of the energy used by traditional streetlamps and includes many innovations - some of which are patented - that make it one of the most efficient systems for road lighting. Available in Europe since 2009, Archilede has been installed successfully in locations throughout Italy, as well as in Zurich and Geneva. So far, "the results have been very encouraging," says ENEL Sole, "with more than 250 municipalities opting for the new LED systems." The four Italian pilot cities, Alessandria, Lodi, Piacenza and Monza, have reportedly saved some 90,000 kWh per annum on public lighting - the equivalent to about 55% of the relative electrical energy consumption. In Finland, Archilede has been added to the portfolio of the Finnish Road Administration as the only LED fixture approved for public lighting. The product has also been tested in the Czech Republic and in the United States, where it has been selected for trial based on the strength of its energy efficiency, reliability and minimal maintenance costs. These same characteristics have won Archilede two design awards: The iF 2010 Award and the FX International Interior Design Award 2009. The fixture has also been IDA-Approved™ by the International Dark Sky Association as a luminaire that minimizes glare, reduces light trespass and does not pollute the night sky. Archilede has been developed to illuminate streets and roads in urban and suburban areas with heavy vehicle traffic; other exterior applications include parking lots, school campuses, and recreational facilities. The product boasts many innovative features that contribute to its energy- and cost-saving capabilities, such as a precision control technology that improves visual perception and eliminates stray light, making obstacles easier to view.A soft, clean shape characterizes the LED luminaire, guaranteeing high luminous efficiency along with the excellent visual style that is a hallmark of the iGuzzini brand. Additional features include: - The arrangement of the LEDs inside the optical assembly concentrates the light emission onto the road surface, thus avoiding light pollution and stray light and resulting in maximum energy efficiency and power consumption reduction. - The special shape of the patented optical assembly that houses the LEDs allows for the optimum arrangement of the individual sources in view of the photometric distribution of the luminous flux and for the best dissipation of the heat produced by the LEDs. - The special geometrical shape of the transparent screen protects the LEDs and the relevant circuitry from the external environment and avoids any light reflections inside the optical assembly, thus increasing the efficiency of the luminaire. -The "intelligent" electronic control of the LED power-supply system makes it possible to easily program the operation period of the luminaire with no need to use further management and control systems. The reduction in the light emission and consequently in the electric energy used when it is not actually needed (for instance in the periods when traffic is very low) saves even more energy (10% to 20%) on the system’s consumption. - Customised operating programs can be added to the software in addition to the three pre-programmed popular programs for road lighting available as standard. - The automatic electronic system used to actively control the temperature of LEDs properly adjusts the power supply, thus increasing their life. The average life of LEDs and the electronic circuit in the luminaire designed and manufactured for ENEL amounts to 60,000h, much more than in other LED luminaires that have no active temperature control system. - The electronic circuit powering the LEDsand the electronic control system tested at the Polytechnic University of Le Marche, has very high resistance to vibrations produced by road traffic. - Thanks to the above-mentioned solutions, an Archilede LED luminaire, with a total power consumption of 106W, can produce the same quantity and quality of light on the road surface as a traditional 150W high-pressure sodium luminaire that would typically consume 178W. Therefore, an actual reduction in energy consumption of 44% can be achieved. Environmental awareness and a responsible, intelligent use of electrical energy have always influenced the design and manufacturer of iGuzzini lighting. Working under the philosophy "Better Light for a Better Life," the company has been lauded for its pioneering efforts to create products that minimize light pollution and CO2 emissions. Alongside Archilede, iGuzzini has developed a series of road and urban lighting systems equipped with LEDs that ensure excellent visual comfort as well as maximum energy saving and minimum impact on the environment. The new products, released in Europe in 2009 include: Lavinia system, small body (design: Massimiliano & Doriana Fuksas), Argo system, and Delphi (design: iGuzzini).About iGuzzini illuminazioneiGuzzini is the Italian leader in technical and architectural lighting and ranks among the top European companies. Established in 1958 and headquartered in Recanati Italy, the company mission is not limited to manufacturing top-quality lighting fixtures, but also includes studying and fostering an understanding of light, and improving the integration of light and architecture through industrial design. To this end, iGuzzini has worked with some of the most famous lighting designers and architects in the world, including Giò Ponti, Rodolfo Bonetto, Renzo Piano, Norman Foster, Mario Cucinella, and Piero Castiglioni, among many others. iGuzzini is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including several from Compasso d'Oro. In 1998, iGuzzini was awarded the Guggenheim Prize for its constant commitment to culture and in 2001 received the Leonardo Prize for quality. iGuzzini belongs to Fimag, a holding company that includes the companies of the Guzzini Group: Fratelli Guzzini, iGuzzini and Teuco.
