The organic light diodes are waferthin surface light sources and therefore open up completely new design options. With the PirOLEDOSRAM now offers a commercially available OLED and LED luminaire for the first time. The concept comprises five mobile ORBEOS panels reflective from behind, woven in a double helix of brushed aluminium that catch the directed light of the LEDs in the base.The 80cm high aluminium double helix is a dynamic looking sculpture, which is based on two ideas – the organic structure matches the DNA helix. The shape it forms is derived from the pirouette, a turningmovement in ballet. The design and lighting engineering were developed by OSRAM lighting designer Dr. Martin Möck. PirOLED is a hybrid luminaire made of an aligned LED section and the soft, diffuseOLED light of the five rotating ORBEOS. The LEDs’ power input is about 6W and the OLEDs’ consumption approx. 4W. The LEDs are incorporated in the base and shine upwards on to the ORBEOS panels. They are reflective on the back. This means the LED beam can be directed and dispersed anywhere.The helix contains five pivot-mounted, circular ORBEOS OLEDs with a light density of 1000cd/m2 and over 5,000 hours of operating life. ORBEOS is a lamp, material and symbol simultaneously. In Asian andScandinavian countries particularly, the shining circle symbolises the moon. The glare-free light density of the ORBEOS panels of 79mm internal diameter has a gentle, soothing effect, comparable to that ofcandlelight. Their rotatability within the helix makes them fun to adjust and play with. The panels are arranged like DNA helix molecules from top to bottom. Each of the five OLED moons can be aligned separately and produces the ideal soft light for tables and faces.Light distribution is considerably more variable than with conventional table lamps. PirOLED is both: an OLED sculpture that alludes to dance and organic chemistry and variable lighting technology with flexible light distribution and illumination strengths.The PirOLED is one of numerous luminaire models that OSRAM has developed in recent months and the first step towards its own OLED luminaire family at the same time. The luminaire concept waspresented among others at the international SuperPiu design show in Milan in April 2010 and at the Bauhaus-Archiv Museum for Design in Berlin in September 2010. Given the positive response, it will nowbe made available to the public in a limited edition in aluminium.The PirOLED is fitted with the ORBEOS CDW-031 OLED panel, which was presented in public last year as the first qualified ORBEOS OLED panel. Its warm white colour temperature (2800K) is similar to the warm light of an incandescent lamp and is therefore suitable for lighting that is atmospheric and functional at the same time. The panel can be switched on and off without any delay. Five Oslon SSLLEDs have been included in a reflector in the base.
