Maines Paper & Food Service reduces lighting energy by 87% with Digital Lumens Intelligent Lighting System

Aug. 25, 2010
Date Announced: 25 Aug 2010 Boston, MA - Digital Lumens today announced that Maines Paper & Food Service, Inc. has deployed the company’s Intelligent Lighting System in their 460,000 square foot headquarters in Conklin, New York, to slash energy use, improve light levels, and meet corporate sustainability targets. Lighting-related energy use has dropped by 87%. Maines expects to save 1,726,108 kWh per year (more than enough electricity to power 200 homes for a year), and 1,240 metric tons of CO2.One of the country’s largest independent broadline foodservice distributors, Maines Paper & Food Service, Inc. has revenues approaching $3 billion, facilities serving 33 states, a dedication to maximizing supply chain efficiencies, and a strong commitment to ‘green’ initiatives.Working with their energy efficiency partner, Groom Energy Solutions, Maines identified lighting as an opportunity for savings and conducted a thorough evaluation of the alternatives, including fluorescents and LEDs. Maines selected the Digital Lumens solution, which combines LED-based fixtures, networking, and software, as a one-for-one retrofit of highbay warehouse lights, and The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) provided the project incentive.“Lighting represents about 20% of our warehouse electricity costs, and a great opportunity to reduce our facilities’ costs and improve operational efficiency,” said Pat DeOrdio, Vice President of Operations, Maines Paper & Food Service, Inc. “We evaluated the Digital Lumens Intelligent Lighting System and found that it enables us to significantly reduce our energy consumption, improve overall safety by increasing light levels, and decrease maintenance. This solution delivers numerous operational and environmental benefits, and positions us to better serve our customers’ needs.”“Sustainability considerations are moving deep into the supply chain, and Maines is a leading example of leveraging energy efficiency to simultaneously improve the bottom line and the green footprint,” said Tom Pincince, president and CEO of Digital Lumens. “We are very pleased that Maines selected Digital Lumens for this world-class distribution center, and are already achieving dramatic energy savings.”Groom Energy Solutions Recommends Digital LumensGroom Energy Solutions, a provider of sustainable, renewable, and energy-efficient services for commercial and industrial companies, worked closely with Maines’ managers to study their operating environment, make recommendations, and install the lighting upgrade project. Groom replaced Maines’ existing 400-Watt, high-pressure sodium fixtures, reducing both energy use and ongoing maintenance.“We’re excited with the results from our implementation with Maines, which included installing the Digital Lumens system in extremely cold and ambient sections of the facility. We’ve witnessed dramatic results, including increased light levels and a significant reduction in operating hours, which lessens Maines’ cooling loads and further lowers their greenhouse gas emissions,” said Bob Kirby, Vice President of Operations, Groom Energy Solutions. “We look forward to working with the Maines team on their sustainability initiatives.”NYSERDA Promotes Innovative Approaches to Energy EfficiencyNYSERDA, which provided financial incentives for the Maines project, is dedicated to helping New York meet its energy goals: reducing energy consumption, promoting the use of renewable energy sources, and protecting the environment. As an organization, it strives to facilitate change through the widespread development and use of innovative technologies to improve New York’s energy, economic, and environmental wellbeing.“NYSERDA is proud to partner with companies like Maines Paper & Food Service, Inc. Groom Energy Solutions, and Digital Lumens that are implementing innovative improvements to reduce energy use,” said Francis J. Murray, President and CEO of NYSERDA. “NYSERDA provides businesses all across the state with funding to help them save money and energy by improving their operational efficiency and making the critical investments needed to protect our environment and enhance our energy security.”About Digital LumensDigital Lumens develops LED-based Intelligent Lighting Systems that reduce industrial customers’ electricity expenses up to 90% and transform industrial lighting into a powerful platform for improved control, efficiency, and operational insight.
