UL receives IAS approval for Energy Star compliance testing

March 3, 2010
Date Announced: 03 Mar 2010 The International Accreditation Service (IAS) has accredited the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) test facility in San Jose, California, to test products for compliance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ENERGY STAR® requirements. IAS accreditation provides UL with formal recognition of its competence to test products for ENERGY STAR compliance, to ensure that products are compliant with their energy efficiency requirements. The scope of the IAS accreditation lists the EPA test that UL conducts for determining the energy efficiency and power consumption of several high tech and consumer electronics products, including computers, imaging equipment and power supplies. During the accreditation process, UL went through rigorous assessment based on the IAS Accreditation Criteria for Testing Laboratories (AC89), including quality management system requirements and technical demonstrations, under ISO/IEC Standard 17025:2005 and ENERGY STAR program testing standards. “It is important that the tools we use to measure energy efficiency are accurate and reliable,” says Stephen Wenc, president of UL Environment. “Receiving accreditation from IAS further demonstrates the commitment UL and UL Environment have to assist our customers in complying with current and future energy efficiency regulations and requirements. When coupled with the launch of UL Environment’s new Energy Efficiency Certification program, customers will be able to deliver their energy efficient products to the marketplace with ease.”Patrick McCullen, IAS Chief Technical Officer, says, “UL is setting the model for an industry that is increasingly focused on environmental care and energy efficiency and IAS is proud to do its part in helping them to achieve this goal.”To view the IAS accreditation certificate issued to UL, visit www.iasonline.org/PDF/TL/TL-414.pdf.IAS accredits special inspection agencies, product certification agencies, inspection programs for metal building manufacturers, fabricator inspection programs, testing and calibration laboratories, inspection agencies, training agencies, curriculum developers, field evaluation bodies, building departments, and building department service providers.
