Heptagon showcases world’s smallest high-efficiency flash and torch LED modules

Feb. 21, 2006
Date Announced: 21 Feb 2006 -- With solid work on expanding diffractive and refractive optics know-how from laser-based products to LED-based ones, Heptagon is proud to announce miniature, SMT compatible LED modules with LED microlenses for flash and torch applications.(Zurich, Switzerland.) Heptagon, a leading supplier of diffractive and refractive micro-optic solutions, is to launch two off-the-shelf SMT compatible optics modules for flash in mobile phones and for torch applications. Tailored optics is optimized for the Luxeon® PWF1 white LED. Customization for other LED sources is also possible. The optics is based on LED microlenses with highly efficient free-form (3-D) microstructures on top of a thin flat substrate. With a footprint of only 3.65-mm square, the flash and torch solutions have only the thickness of 1.91 and 2.96 mm, respectively, including the holder. The flash design collimates light into the output full angle of 44 × 56 degrees with uniform brightness and customized illumination pattern (brightness at the edges and corners is min 50% and min 30%, respectively, compared with on-axis). On-axis gain of brightness is >2.5 compared to naked LED. The image shows the flash design with the LED microlens (blue) mounted in a miniature holder (grey) and placed directly on top of the LED die (brown). The torch design collimates light into the output full angle of 30 degrees with an increase in on-axis brightness of ×6. LED microlenses are pre-mounted in precision LCP plastic holders, which can be glued directly on to the PCB so that they stand directly over the LED die. “Following strong interest in Heptagon’s customized LED micro-optics, a few examples of the products are now available for off-the-shelf solutions, too,” says Chuck Milligan, Heptagon’s CEO. “Our propriety wafer-scale REEMO® replication enables us to produce lead-free IR reflow compatible optics (certified up to 280C) with low price.”About HeptagonHeptagon is a privately held Finnish-Swiss company offering advanced diffractive and refractive micro-optics products to OEM suppliers. Heptagon's components are used in many applications including, LED lensing, CMOS imaging, display, optical communications, consumer electronics and industrial optics. Heptagon’s primary operations are in Rueschlikon, Switzerland, just outside of Zurich.
