Yuji becomes first Chinese LED manufacturer granted NIMS red phosphor license

Feb. 14, 2019
National Institute of Materials Science (NIMS), a Japanese scientific research center, has changed its Licensing Scheme for the S/CASN (nitride red)* as of October, 2018. In the past, both licenses for phosphors and applications (devices) were granted as one package to phosphor manufacturing companies. In its new licensing scheme, its comprehensive S/CASN phosphor patent is divided into a group of phosphor patents and a group of application (device) patents.

This means that LED manufacturers who used to automatically obtain the license by purchasing S/CASN phosphor from licensed phosphor manufacturers now have to acquire application license directly from NIMS for device (LED) manufacturing.

Based on the cooperation in phosphors, Beijing Yuji-xinguang Optoelectronic Technology Co., Ltd., the LED manufacturing subsidiary of Yuji, reached licensing agreement with NIMS and has become the first manufacturer in Mainland China that is granted NIMS licenses.

*Also known as CASN, SCASN and 1113 phosphor which all refer to phosphors having a basic composition such as CaAlSiN3:Eu, (Sr,Ca)AlSiN3:Eu, etc.
