Spennymoor - Zumtobel Group’s Spennymoor facility is a successful international manufacturing site with luminaires in high demand across the globe, providing solutions with the company’s technologically advanced products and intelligent LED lighting. On February 28, Baroness Rona Fairhead CBE, Minister of State for Trade and Export Promotion at the Department for International Trade (DIT), visited the Spennymoor site as part of the 2019 UK Export Champions Launch Day in County Durham.

Following a plant tour, accompanied by Peter Arthy, Head of Operations Lighting Brands, and Martin Thompson, Thorn Academy of Light Manager, Baroness Fairhead held an open press session upon the launch of the 2019 UK Export Champions Programme. Zumtobel Group Lighting Brands Operations team in Spennymoor was invited to become a Northern Powerhouse Export Champion because of a first class, long term track record of exporting goods globally and as a key manufacturer within County Durham, North East England and UK.

Minister for Trade and Export Promotion at the Department for International Trade, Baroness Fairhead CBE, commented “The Northern Powerhouse is a vitally important economic region for the United Kingdom, and it is companies such as Thorn Lighting that are really putting it on the map. I was hugely impressed by the professionalism and dedication of its people during my visit to their factory in Spennymoor. The quality and innovative technology of their products is clear to see. It has been a privilege for DIT to work with them and they are a testament to the prosperity and success that exporting can bring. Demand for UK goods and services is continuing to grow around the world, and I’d urge companies of all shapes and sizes to get in touch with the Department for International Trade to learn more about how we can help them reach their exporting potential.”

Matthew Boucher, Managing Director of Zumtobel Group UK and Ireland, commented “We are immensely proud of our ties to the North East of England. For 90 years, our Lighting Brands site in Spennymoor has been pushing technology forward to produce the very best solutions for our customers both in the UK and globally. We are delighted by Baroness Fairhead’s visit as it acknowledges the achievements that have been made.”

Peter Arthy, Head of Operations Spennymoor, commented “I am delighted that the Minister of State for Trade and Export has visited our Manufacturing facility in Spennymoor. We have made significant improvements in recent years in terms of manufacturing technology and factory performance through implementing “lean” processes. Without any doubt, our greatest asset is ‘Our People’, who have embraced change, shown great flexibility and worked hard to achieve our performance targets. I am extremely proud of the performance of our UK manufacturing plant.”
