Quintessence: The system solution for excellent visual comfort

March 8, 2019
Ceiling-integrated lighting is the first choice if light sources are to take a back seat to the lighting effect within the architecture: For example, in administrative and educational buildings with their diverse uses and spatial situations. With the new Quintessence recessed luminaires, ERCO presents a system solution consisting of downlights, wallwashers and adjustable luminaires that meets high demands regarding lighting design, visual comfort and energy efficiency whilst always keeping an eye on cost-effectiveness.

Quintessence sets standards in terms of visual comfort, efficiency and quality of light for recessed luminaires. The high-efficiency product range, consisting of downlights, lens wallwashers, directional and recessed spotlights in round and square versions, offers lighting designers a versatile toolbox for ceiling-integrated lighting solutions. Highly typical of Quintessence is their good glare control and high uniformity of illumination.

Downlights: Light distribution makes the difference
In its Quintessence downlights, ERCO utilizes an optical system consisting of a diffuser lens and low brightness reflector and offers two rotationally symmetric 60° and 90° light distributions with a particularly uniform light beam. The 90° extra wide flood light distribution enables extremely wide luminaire spacings and as a result, highly economical general lighting. Added to this is the balanced proportion of light on vertical surfaces which is ideal for pleasantly illuminating faces for example. Despite the wide beam angle, the light distribution convinces with a cut-off of 40° and therefore very good glare control—a sophisticated combination of photometric properties. With the narrower 60° wide flood light distribution, existing systems can be converted to LED technology without having to modify the luminaire arrangement and thus change the appearance of the architecture. The Quintessence downlight range features four sizes with luminous fluxes of up to 4400lm and an installed load of up to 32W. The downlights, in particular the 60° wide flood light distribution, also confidently achieve the high lumen-output illumination of higher rooms such as reception halls and libraries, with the high cut-off angle offering excellent visual comfort. Thanks to various installation details—round or square, overlapping or flush—Quintessence downlights ideally match a wide variety of architectural concepts.

Zonal light with lens wallwashers
The functional differentiation of the Quintessence range reflects ERCO's approach to comprehend light as a dimension of architecture in its own right, to structure and stage rooms, to create orientation and to direct attention through accents. A particular focus is placed on vertical illumination. ERCO Quintessence wallwashers generate particularly uniform vertical illumination even with large luminaire spacing to make rooms appear bright and open. The special wallwasher optic with asymmetric light distribution features a cut-off of 80° on the room side along with optimum glare protection. This enables flexible use of the room.

Accent lighting from the ceiling
As lighting tools for accentuating objects on walls or in rooms, spotlights and floodlights complement the Quintessence range. They bring together the adjustability of track spotlights with the restrained design of recessed luminaires. Three variants offer lighting designers wide design flexibility:
- Within the Quintessence recessed luminaires, Quintessence directional spotlights have the visual appearance of a downlight. They can be pivoted through 30° from the vertical and rotated through 360°, and feature narrow light distributions consisting of narrow spot, spot and flood with beam angles of approximately 5° to 28°.
- Quintessence recessed spotlights and floodlights resemble classic spotlights in their design. They can be pivoted by up to 40°, rotated through 360° and, in addition to four rotationally symmetric light distributions (approx. 5° to 47°), also offer a freely rotatable, axially symmetric beam characteristic (oval flood, approx. 53°x17°). According to the design of the ceiling, lighting designers can choose between a recessed luminaire head or a luminaire head protruding from the ceiling.
- Pinhole directional spotlights comply with the principle of 'light instead of luminaire'. The lighting technology is located behind a small light emission aperture of 72x35mm and makes the luminaire almost disappear as a technical detail. The 5° narrow spot light distribution can be pivoted by up to 30° from the vertical and is rotatable through 360°.

Optimized for durable, low-maintenance operation
The Quintessence range covers luminous fluxes from 210lm (directional spotlights) to 4400lm (downlights and wallwashers) with installed loads from 2W to 32W. Thanks to the large portion of components developed and manufactured in-house, ERCO has complete control over the service life of its digital lighting tools: After 50,000 operating hours, the manufacturer still guarantees a luminous flux of over 90% of the original value for 90% of LEDs installed. The failure rate of individual LEDs, i.e. not the entire luminaire, is only 0.1% after this time. The switchable, phase dimmable and 0-10V dimmable versions are available with six different spectra from warm white to neutral white light color: 2700K and 3000K with CRI 92, 3000K with CRI 95, 3500K with CRI 92 and 4000K optionally with CRI 82 or 92.
