Novel LED backlight device structure to be revealed at SID
A new Scottish venture is set to reveal details of a novel LED backlight technology that will pave the way for thinner, more power-efficient large area displays.
Over the last two years, Design LED Products Ltd has been working with ITI Techmedia to create this disruptive new technology as part of a $5m R&D Programme. Details will be revealed in a Paper to be presented at the Society for Information Display (SID) event in Texas between 2nd – 5th June.
The Paper, entitled ‘Low-cost Large-area LED Backlight’ has received an SID Distinguished Contributed Paper Award. Only ten of these significant awards are delivered each year. The paper was praised for its originality and novelty of the work and for the significance of the results to the industry. Presenting the Paper will be Dr James Gourlay from Design LED Products and Ian Miller from ITI Techmedia at 10:40am in Room 214 C/D on 4th June.
ITI Techmedia and Design LED are also revealing their intention to create a new collaborative venture to market this technology. The company, which will be located in Scotland, aims to introduce its first product to the market in 2010.
Stuart Bain, Chief Executive of Design LED, said: “This Research and Development Programme has created novel, disruptive technology to meet the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s market. It offers a thin, power-efficient backlight unit which can be manufactured at a cost point that is attractive to the market, and offers Design LED the opportunity to spin-out a new company to meet this demand.”
Terry Hurley, Managing Director of ITI Techmedia, added: “We are delighted to be working with Design LED on this venture, which will enable us to realise the potential from this ground-breaking technology. Interest has already been expressed by prospective customers in the technology and we are looking forward to significant market engagement over the coming months."
