World's thinnest lighted signs fly at San Jose Airport with Luxeon LEDs

April 9, 2009
Date Announced: 09 Apr 2009 SAN JOSE, CA — New 4”-deep illuminated way finding signs at the Mineta San Jose International Airport in California are half the depth of standard signage in the same class, thanks to LUXEON Rebel based light modules designed by Silicon Constellations of Santa Clara, California. The combination of LUXEON technology, a perimeter lighting scheme, and Silicon Constellations’ Noveseo™ light modules minimized cabinet depth by eliminating the need for space to mount a backlight panel, creating the thinnest double-faced lighted signs in the world. Each sign is illuminated by multiple 1” x 1.5” Noveseo Rebellious I™ modules placed along the top and bottom edges. Each module contains a single minimum-100-lumen cool white LUXEON Rebel LED mounted on a special board assembly that maximizes thermal dissipation and allows the body of the cabinet to be used as a heatsink. High LUXEON Rebel flux levels coupled with the thermal management innovations of the Rebellious I module are enabling just 14 LEDs to light a seven-foot-wide sign. The LUXEON based solution also reduces energy consumption by more than 70% over fluorescent or neon backlight versions, further lowering costs by quadrupling light source life, and helping advance San José’s ‘Green Vision’ agenda for establishing the region as a role model for sustainable development. The first Noveseo-powered signs were installed at the airport’s outdoor ground transportation island. Over time, approximately 300 of the new signs will be built to provide directional signage for airport visitors.A detailed case study about the tools and collaboration that made this project successful is now available at www.philipslumileds.com/pdfs/CS23.pdf.About Silicon Constellations Founded in 2001 Silicon Constellations of Santa Clara, CA is privately-held technology company specializing in development of solid-state lighting solutions for both standard products and custom-engineered applications.
