Toshiba America Electronic Components introduces 2 white LED drivers

April 3, 2009
Date Announced: 03 Apr 2009 Highly Efficient Step-Up Type DC-DC Converter for White LED with Flash-Mode Capability Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)*, a committed leader that collaborates with technology companies to create breakthrough designs, today announced two new highly-efficient white LED drivers (LEDDs), the TB62730WLG and the TB62750FTG. They are designed to drive the white LEDs used to backlight the LCDs used in applications such as LED camera flashes and strobes or for backlighting in cellular phones, personal digital assistants (PDA), digital still cameras (DSC) and other mobile products. Both LEDDs integrate a variety of features that will help OEMs bring new portable devices to market with bright displays that help minimize power consumption and lengthen battery life. These LEDDs are two of several products Toshiba announced today that expand the company's Mobile Strategic Initiative, a product and customer support program designed to facilitate ease of design for new mobile phones and other portable devices."The freedom that portable devices afford consumers is limited by battery life. Displays are a major consumer of battery power, and as such it is vital to the success of a portable device that its display is as power efficient as possible," said Andrew Burt, vice president of the Imaging and Communications Marketing Group in the ASSP Business Unit at TAEC. "With the launch of our new TB62730WLG and TB62750FTG LEDDs, we bolster our commitment to our Mobile Strategic Initiative and enable our customers to design new portable devices that deliver a compelling visual experience with lower power overhead."The operating efficiency of the TB62730WLG and TB62750FTG LEDDs is 80 percent in flash mode. The devices require only one external inductor to keep the current flow constant, even at falling battery voltages. Furthermore, a NMOS transistor, which is required for the switching of the external inductor, is integrated into both the TB62730WLG and TB62750FTG LEDDs. The supply voltage range for the devices is 2.8V to 5.5V. Both devices have a soft-start function to prevent power overshoots when switching between shutdown mode and flash or light mode. They are capable of driving white LEDs at 800mA using lithium ion batteries. The devices are also equipped with over-voltage protection (OVP) and a temperature shutdown function to protect both the LEDD and the display from error conditions. Additionally, the TB62750FTG has one additional integrated constant current driver for a red LED light.Pricing and AvailabilityThe TB62750 comes in a surface mounted, 24-pinVQON24 package. The TB62730 comes in a leading edge surface mounted 16-pin WLCSP package, with a size of less than 2mm x 2mm. Both products are sampling now and are available at $1.00 each in 10,000 unit quantities. Both products are available in mass production depending upon customer order requirements.About Toshiba's Mobile Strategic InitiativeToshiba's Mobile Strategic Initiative, announced in 2007, combines an expanded product portfolio, support tools (color tuning, reference designs and evaluation boards) and the company's cooperation with baseband, application processor, I/O and core vendors to help TAEC customers address tough issues facing the current and future mobile handset/portable consumer electronics designs, including system integration, emerging standards and interoperability. Additionally, TAEC provides local application and design-in support and access to a host of analog peripheral ICs from other Toshiba divisions and business units, including the Toshiba Dynastron CMOS image sensor/module family, LCD drivers, I/O expanders, memory products and LCD panels.*About TAECThrough proven commitment, lasting relationships and advanced, reliable electronic components, Toshiba enables its customers to create market-leading designs.
