DOE SSL Manufacturing Workshop 2009 report posted

Oct. 16, 2009
Date Announced: 16 Oct 2009 The U.S. Department of Energy has published the summary report from the 2009 DOE Solid-State Lighting (SSL) Manufacturing Workshops, held April 21–22 in Fairfax, Virginia, and June 24–25 in Vancouver, Washington. A PDF copy of the report may be downloaded from the DOE SSL Web site at www.ssl.energy.gov. The workshops were key first steps in the launch of a new DOE SSL research and development (R&D) manufacturing initiative to enhance product consistency and quality and to accelerate cost reductions through manufacturing improvements. More than 350 total participants—chip makers, fixture and component manufacturers, and others—joined DOE at the workshops to examine underlying issues related to materials, equipment, and other factors that influence SSL product quality and cost. The Fairfax workshop attendees identified key barriers and recommendations toward lower-cost, higher-quality SSL products, and this input was used to develop a “strawman” roadmap for review at the Vancouver workshop. The final version of the roadmap (also available for download at www.ssl.energy.gov) represents industry consensus on the expected evolution of SSL manufacturing. Many thanks to the Fairfax and Vancouver workshop participants for helping to shape the Department's SSL R&D portfolio and this new focus on SSL manufacturing issues. The expertise and partnership of such a wide range of participants contributes to the success of DOE's efforts to guide SSL to market.
