Evluma Clearlight LED luminaire receives International Dark Sky Seal of Approval
Oct. 7, 2009
Date Announced: 07 Oct 2009 Evluma, a manufacturer of energy efficient SSL lighting products, announces that its product, the Clearlight, a 40W LED replacement lamp for 50-175W MV or 70-150W HPS lamps used in NEMA Type 5 fixtures, has qualified for the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) Dark Sky Seal of Approval. The Clearlight is a Full Cutoff retrofit lamp. No light is emitted above 90°.The mission of the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) is to preserve and protect the nighttime environment and our heritage of dark skies through environmentally responsible outdoor lighting. “A dark-sky friendly retrofit for the dusk-till-dawn ‘glare bomb’ is a wonderful thing,” said IDA Managing Director, Pete Strasser. Approved devices receive a certificate and use of the Seal of Approval. Manufacturers may use this seal to promote and advertise their IDA approved dark sky friendly products. Light pollution is defined as excessive and inappropriate artificial light. Light trespass, light falling where it is not intended, wanted, or need, and glare contribute to light pollution. MV and HPS bulbs emit light in a globe and above 90° where light becomes glare and ceases to contribute to lighting the task area on the ground, says Evluma. “Light scattered into the sky is wasted light. Wasted light is wasted energy,” said Cathleen Shattuck, Creative Director at Evluma. The Clearlight was specifically developed to be an energy efficient, dark-sky friendly, mercury free alternative to outdoor MV or HPS lighting. With a power factor of ≥ 0.9 and the ability to bypass the legacy ballast, the Clearlight uses over 75% less electricity than a 175W MV lamp, says the company. An active cooling system keeps the thermal junction temperature low, resulting in long life and delivering an estimated L70 at 70,000 hours or longer.Evluma will be attending the International Dark-Sky Association Annual Meeting and Conference to be held in Phoenix November 14-15, 2009.About EvlumaEvluma is a division of Express Imaging Systems, LLC a company with over 150 years of combined experience developing lighting applications for photographic equipment and the photofinishing industry. Light pollution is an increasing problem, threatening astronomical facilities, ecologically sensitive habitats, our energy consumption, and our human heritage. IDA was founded in 1988, by Dr. David L. Crawford and colleague Dr. Tim Hunter, to address the growing problem of light pollution.
