Manchester/Boston Regional Airport saves energy and money with LED lighting

Sept. 10, 2009
Date Announced: 10 Sep 2009 Manchester/Boston Airport has improved visibility in its parking garage and is saving money with new LED Lighting technology developed by M-SYSTEMS INC and Leading Edge Design Group. As you wind around the Manchester Boston Regional Airport parking garage helix, notice the lights: the airport recently replaced 400-watt lamps with new 40-watt LED technology with day lighting controls. The project will save the airport about $42,000 annually in energy costs and pay for itself in less than two years. Also, the LED lamps should last for more than 50,000 hours vs 15,000 hours for the existing lamps.Jon Adams, Airport Facility Manager, worked with Leading Edge Design Group on design and installation issues. "Energy savings was a strong consideration for this project," said Adams. "However, we were also attracted to the prospect of substantial savings in maintenance costs. We proceeded with the project after conducting a successful test of the product, and viewing before and after pictures."LED lighting is the standard for traffic lights, and EXIT signs. Recent technological improvements are expanding the number of LED applications to include indoor down lighting, indirect lighting, and outdoor lighting. These new applications and products are relatively untested and expensive compared to established technology. However, LED’s provide longer life and higher efficacy than other technologies. PSNH and the Airport will monitor this project as a test case.See the before and after photo.
