Date Announced: 06 Nov 2009 The latest, high-efficiency Immersion™ LED Refrigerated Display Lighting RV30 Series from GE Lighting is now available across Europe providing increased energy savings, reduced CO2 emissions and longer life for environmentally responsible retailing. GE Lighting’s Immersion™ LED Refrigerated Display Lighting is already changing the freezer market in the US where its installation at Walmart represents the single largest application of white LEDs replacing fluorescent lighting in a retail display setting. Walmart has installed GE Lighting’s Immersion™ LEDs at 500 US stores and expects to net up to 66% in energy savings. Also in the US, United Supermarkets, based in Texas, has retrofitted low and medium temperature refrigerated display cases in all of its 47 stores with Immersion™ LEDs, and expects to save more than $633,000 in energy and maintenance costs annually.Running on just 29 watts per 1.5m door, Immersion’s low operating wattage reduces energy consumption from case lighting up to 60 percent compared with T8 fluorescent systems—145 watts for the RV30 Series compared with 360 watts for fluorescent in a typical 5-door freezer. This wattage reduction eases the workload of the compressor that removes heat from inside the case, providing up to an additional 100 watts of indirect energy savings.Speaking about the new product, GE Lighting’s Commercial Director for EMEA, Simon Phillips, said; “We’re continually striving to deliver solutions that give our customers the best quality lighting technology in line with our ecomagination strategy. The new range of Immersion™ LEDs for refrigerated displays uses our award winning LED technology to deliver significant reductions in energy, costs, CO2 and material waste, all of which help to curb retailers’ impact on the environment. The European roll out will build on the success we have seen in the US where we have now supplied over 1.25 million metres of Immersion™ LEDs.”With greater efficiency than any previous LED refrigerated display lighting system, the Immersion™ RV30 Series, a product of GE’s ecomagination initiative, allows retailers to create the right look throughout the entire case area with a wider range of colour temperatures and a bright, uniform light. It is available in 3500K, 4100K and 5000K colour temperatures that deliver uniform light levels of up to 1150 lux (Initial illuminance (lux) +/- 15% based on typical in-store performance). The system’s innovative optic design keeps light directed on the displayed packages, while reducing distracting glare and light spill. Its lights are optimized to enable a 70-percent light level uniformity across the package facings. The system contains no lead, mercury or glass for easier handling and disposal. It is also RoHS and NSF compliant.Calculating benefitsIf a retailer replaces T8 fluorescent lamps with Immersion™ RV30 LED light fixtures in 100 refrigerated case doors in each of its 100 stores, the reduction in energy usage could save over €375,000 and reduce CO2 emissions by over 2,300 tonnes annually over the long 50,000-hour rated life of the LED system (assumes 24/7 operation at a cost of €0.07/kwh). It’s the equivalent of planting over 650 acres of trees each year.
