EcoTek Lighting has installed a high-performance, energy-efficient light box with Direct Backlit LED Array technology at the San Diego Natural History Museum along with three beautifully designed and engineered poster frames. The three matching poster frames hold movie posters on the south wall of the theater entry vestibule just off the atrium.
The thin-profile, two-inch-deep displays combine superb styling aesthetics with superior functionality, and the all-welded aluminum construction of the extruded lightweight frame ensures premium product durability and is 100% recyclable.

The new light box with Direct Backlit LED Array technology is installed in the 3D theater and replaces two older fluorescent light boxes. The 2”-deep LED light box provides powerful performance, enhanced illumination and ease of use, while also offering space-saving capabilities because of the narrow profile. LEDs are solid-state light engines that last from 50,000 to 100,000 hours, compared to T-8 fluorescent lamps that only last from 8,000 to 20,000 hours. LED-illuminated light boxes deliver four times greater energy efficiency than fluorescent light boxes, and enable users to qualify for energy and tax rebates.

The new LED light box from EcoTek Lighting:
• Lasts up to seven times longer than a light box using T-8 fluorescent lamps.
• Does not radiate infrared heat (IR), reducing building heat load and decreasing air conditioning costs.
• Does not emit ultraviolet (UV) light, which reduces the fading of graphics.
• Does not contain heavy metal pollutants nor toxic and flammable gases to operate, as with fluorescent lamps.
• Does not introduce mercury into landfills, as is the case with improperly disposed of fluorescent lamps.
• Reduces maintenance costs by eliminating fluorescent-lamp replacement since LEDs last for years.
• Can operate in harsh environments and withstand temperatures ranging from -40° F to +185° F. Fluorescent lamps have executable difficulties in cold environments.

The energy-saving technology, lower maintenance costs and extreme durability of LEDs decrease CO2 emissions, reduce the associated carbon footprint and help protect the environment to ensure a stable climate for future generations. The use of LEDs helps to save the environment and reduce the carbon footprint of the light box. All Direct Backlit LED Array light boxes from EcoTek Lighting meet federal standards for energy efficiency and green manufacturing regulations, including UL, CUL and CE listings and European RoHS Standards, and contribute points to LEED-certified buildings. They are fully recyclable at end-of-life, and contain no heavy metals or other hazardous components.

“We are proud to partner with the San Diego Natural History Museum to contribute to energy conservation in California through the use of energy-efficient Direct Backlit LED Array light box technology,“ said Rick Farrell, EcoTek Lighting president. “Light boxes using LED illumination contribute to saving energy while also providing brighter, longer-lasting and more evenly distributed lighting.”

About the San Diego Natural History Museum (SDNHM)
Founded in 1874, the San Diego Society of Natural History is the oldest scientific institution in southern California, and the third oldest west of the Mississippi. The mission of SDNHM is to interpret the natural world through research, education and exhibits; to promote understanding of the evolution and diversity of southern California and the peninsula of Baja California; and to inspire in all a respect for nature and the environment. The vision of SDNHM is to be the premier collections-based environmental education and natural history research resource in our region, and to provide programs that are timely, user-friendly, and relevant to the real-life needs of the diverse populations of the San Diego-Baja California region today and tomorrow.
