Date Announced: 09 Feb 2012 San Diego, CA -- This week, California manufacturer NuLEDs, Inc. received the DOE sponsored Lighting Facts Label (www.lightingfacts.com) for the MiniCan™ LED recessed downlight. The Lighting Facts Label is an important milestone for manufacturers in the LED and energy efficient lighting industry. “This is right up there with the day we received our UL Listing for the MiniCan!” said NuLEDs Director of Business Development, Lisa Isaacson. “Every chance we have to show consumers quality and instill confidence in performance is important to us as well as this industry as a whole,” she added. The DOE sponsored Lighting Facts Label program was designed to provide oversight on performance claims made by LED manufacturers. Manufacturers request the label by providing supporting documentation for their fixtures, such as an IES LM-79-08 test report. The program then evaluates the claims made by the manufacturer such as power draw (watts) and color temperature (CCT) and compares it to independent testing data. If claims are validated the manufacturer is issued an official label to be used on packaging and marketing materials.Similar to a nutrition label for food, the Lighting Facts Label also gives consumers a standard basis for comparing LED products. As many saw during the first years of LEDs for general lighting, unproven and outrageous claims on efficiency and lifetime ended up souring some consumers towards the emerging technology. The label helps shrink this “thin gray line” between marketing verbiage and actual performance. “We are also in process with California Title 24 appliance approval and expect the MiniCan to pass their requirements for high efficacy LED luminaires within the next month,” Isaacson responded when asked what was next for the MiniCan. NuLEDs newly issued labels will make it onto packaging in the next coming weeks.
