Date Announced: 02 Apr 2012 Background: Fresh Start is a youth development program that started in Darby, PA, in 2008. This is a private program that is dedicated in helping teenagers develop and ‘make a difference.’ The Darby Fresh Start building had F40T12 – 4 lamp fixtures illuminating the inside. These fixtures consumed over 10,800 kWh per year, with energy costs of over $13,900 over a ten year period. With the new LED lamps and OptaLume fixtures over $10,000 in energy costs will be saved over a ten year time span. OptaLume is an highly reflective plastic substrate. The reflector has greater than 97% reflectance across the visible spectrum, allowing light fixtures to distribute more efficient light output with an even, low-glare aesthetic. The Client: Darby Borough, located in Delaware County, PennsylvaniaObjective: The objective of this project was to increase light levels and visibility while decreasing maintenance and energy costs and consumption.Challenge: The challenge was in trying to reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs, while increasing light levels and visibility in the building. Resolution: Stouch Lighting was able to provide and install new LED light fixtures and OptaLume technology to replace the F40T12 – 4-lamp fixtures. The new LED lights are much brighter and crisper, not to mention eco-friendly and energy efficient. The OptaLume reflectors distribute light evenly, while decreasing energy consumption, and in turn save money and energy for Darby’s Fresh Start Building.Outcome: The Fresh Start Building reduced energy consumption by 69% while increasing light levels with an even distribution.
