Nualight appoints global LED lighting expert as new CTO

June 19, 2012
Date Announced: 19 Jun 2012 Dr. Berry Kock, previously head of Philips LightLabs in the Netherlands, has been appointed Chief Technical Officer at the Nualight group, an applications specialist in LED lighting with a particular focus on food retail. His appointment will support the Irish group’s global expansion plans which have seen its staff numbers exceed 200 across Europe and North America in just five years. Nualight is recognised as a pioneer and innovator in LED lighting for refrigerated displays in food retail with a customer base that includes leading supermarket chains such Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Migros, Stop & Shop, Tengelmann and many more. Dr. Kock’s appointment is part of Nualight’s strategy to expand into full-store LED lighting and follows on from the acquisition of Lumoluce in September 2011 which brought two new competence centres to the group in terms of point source lighting and power management. With this acquisition, Nualight now has specialist expertise in smart lighting for high-performance buildings and a distribution network across 23 countries in Europe. A key differentiator for Nualight group is its exclusive focus on LED. Unlike most lighting companies who are balancing a legacy lamp replacement model with the rise of LED, Nualight is designing a new generation of sustainable lighting using the unique qualities of LED technology in terms of intelligence, form factor and configurability. From Kock’s time at Lightlabs (a 250 person internationally-staffed innovation facility), he brings particular competence to the group in LEDification (transitioning conventional lighting to LED), Digitalization (adding intelligence to lighting fixtures) and Applications know-how. Prior to leading the Philips LightLabs operation, Kock directed the back-end development of Philips Lighting’s compact fluorescent lamp category between 2001 and 2007 and was responsible for operations in Mexico, Poland, China and the Netherlands. Between 1994 and 2001, he undertook various pioneering roles for Philips Lumileds. Liam Kelly, CEO of Nualight, said: “Berry Kock is a respected expert in LED lighting, particularly in the area of intelligent control and innovative applications of LED lighting. He brings a wealth of experience to Nualight's expert development team and will accelerate the achievement of our vision to radically reinvent how lighting is used to drive commercial performance by the world’s leading retailers.” Led by Dr. Liam Kelly, a leading authority in LED lighting, Nualight is funded by Climate Change Capital, ESB Novus Modus, 4th Level Ventures and the Quinn retail family. This unique combination of LED technology, cleantech expertise and food retail experience makes Nualight a powerful partner for retailers who wish to drive footfall to their food displays while delivering on their sustainability agenda.
