Lighting the foyer of the Torre Agbar Building

Nov. 30, 2012
Date Announced: 30 Nov 2012 Soaring to a height of 142 metres and 34 storeys above the ground, the Torre Agbar is one of Catalonia’s tallest buildings and provides 39,000 square metres of usable space.Inspired by the works of Antoni Gaudí and designed to resemble a huge fountain reaching up to the Barcelona sky, the Torre Agbar is the brainchild of the French architect Jean Nouvel and the Barlecona-based b720 Arquitectos company. The name of the building was created in honour of the client, Barcelona’s water utility company Aguas de Barcelona. The Gruppo Agbar holding company is also headquartered in the Torre Agbar building. With its shimmering glass and aluminium façade, the tower reminds the onlooker of something between a giant water fountain and the scaly skin of a reptile. Moreover, the unique design of the tower’s immediate surroundings lets the building appear to be floating in a body of water. At night the tower is additionally illuminated by 4,500 lighted diodes that constantly change colour. The building mainly houses office space, a cafeteria and a multipurpose area. It was officially inaugurated by the King of Spain on 16 September 2005.VS LED Technology for the FoyerFor Vossloh-Schwabe, the Torre Agbar project began in September 2011 with the aim of improving the lighting situation in the building’s foyer. The obvious solution lay in Vossloh-Schwabe’s energy-efficient LED lighting teamed with VS DALI drivers and the LiCS Indoor Light Management System. In cooperation with our customer, NEXIA ILUMINACION, a project-specific luminaire based on the VS LED Shop module (3000 K) was then developed. These LED modules excel due to:• a long service life,• low energy-consumption costs thanks to high light output,• a high colour rendering value (CRI),• easy dimming and• immediate light without any time delay (just like an incandescent lamp). Thanks to its low installation depth, flat geometry and ability to be mounted directly on heat-conductive surfaces, the module facilitates very slim luminaire designs.LiCS Indoor – Top-class Light Management SystemVossloh-Schwabe’s LiCS Indoor system enables customised control of individual luminaires or luminaire groups, e.g. with the help of sensors, commonly available push buttons or wireless push buttons. If required, the system can be flexibly reconfigured without needing any rebuilding work – or even a PC. All settings are directly made using the rotary push key on the controller, while the individual configuration steps are clearly shown on the display screen (in a choice of five languages). For the foyer of the Torre Agbar, the wireless VS Light Controller LW was used alongside VS MultiSensors. Various light scenes were pre-programmed and can now be selected at the touch of a button. A sensor-controlled constant-light setting also ensures predefined basic lighting in the approx. 100 m² multipurpose area, which is illuminated by no less than 30 ceiling luminaires installed at a height of 6 metres.Company Profile Vossloh-SchwabeVossloh-Schwabe is one of the largest manufacturers of lighting technology components and systems in the world and has been a part of the Japanese Panasonic Group since 2002.
