MnDOT achieves energy and maintenance reductions with Lumenpulse LED lighting and digital controls

July 10, 2014
MONTREAL, QC and BOSTON, MA -- Lumenpulse Inc., a leading pure-play specification-grade LED lighting solutions provider, has helped convert the iconic John A. Blatnik Bridge to LED lighting and digital control. The company's luminaires were used with its breakthrough Lumentalk technology to provide a cost-effective, modern lighting system to the bridge, which stands 7,975 feet (2,431 m) long and close to 120 feet (37 m) high.

Lumentalk is a patented technology that enables digital control of LED lighting, using the existing AC power lines as the carrier for data. The technology is protocol independent, allowing it to carry DMX, 0-10, Dali, Triac or ELV dimming signals. Lumentalk simplified the bridge's conversion to LED lighting and digital control, reducing the total amount of necessary conduit, cable and labor.

"Lumentalk is an easy way to modernize lighting and control systems, particularly in older buildings or hard-to-reach locations, where installation might ordinarily prove costly," said Francois-Xavier Souvay, President and CEO at Lumenpulse. "We're very proud to have been a part of the rehabilitation project of the Blatnik Bridge. It's an important landmark for the region, and it clearly illustrates the impact Lumentalk can have on installation and long-term maintenance costs," he said.

To reduce energy consumption and simplify maintenance, the original luminaires of the bridge's lighting system were replaced with Lumentalk-enabled Lumenbeam XLarge luminaires. The high-performance LED luminaires reduced the total amount of luminaires used on the bridge -- from 216 to 90 -- improving the appearance of the bridge while simultaneously delivering 60% energy savings.

"The new system has allowed us to use cost-efficient LED luminaires, and a smaller distribution system," Daniel Erickson, Project Engineer at MnDOT - Duluth Construction. "Compared to the original system, which only showed the outline of the bridge, the new lighting design really showcases the structural elements of the bridge at night...it looks great against the backdrop of Lake Superior and Saint Louis Bay," he said.

About Lumentalk
Lumentalk is a patented technology that enables digital control of LED lighting over existing AC power lines, thus reducing installation costs and facilitating the conversion to LED lighting. With Lumentalk, electrical wiring becomes a stable, noise-free, high-speed communications link, enabling LED fixtures to be controlled without additional wiring for data. The technology is protocol independent, making it compatible with common dimmer and control standards such as Triac, 0-10V, DALI, DMX and ELV.
