Maxim to demonstrate lighting automation using Powerline Communications at Lightfair International

May 18, 2011
Date Announced: 18 May 2011 Sunnyvale, CA — Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) will showcase its powerline communications (PLC) technology at LIGHTFAIR(R) International. This technology is presently being used for lighting automation in the Tunnel Lighting Addressable Control System (TLACS) from Nyx Hemera Technologies. Also on display will be the MAX2992, Maxim’s new G3-PLC(TM) PLC evaluation system. The TLACS is the most complete and technologically advanced solution on the market for automating tunnel and roadway lighting. Developed with Maxim’s OFDM PLC products, the system has the ability to adapt the brightness at a tunnel’s entrance, based on the exterior luminance. It can also monitor the condition of the lights, control each light individually, and adapt to any lighting scheme in any tunnel. Maxim’s PLC technology enables the TLACS to control up to 1022 luminaries over power lines of up to 3km in length. Compared to standard lighting systems, the TLACS reduces maintenance costs by 30% and energy consumption by 25%, while improving safety. “TLACS dramatically increases safety and reduces operation costs for tunnel lighting through new advances in powerline technology,” said Pierre Longtin, President of Nyx Hemera Technologies, “Maxim’s powerline products provide the reliability and communication range necessary for our products to solve the lighting-automation challenges of tunnel and roadway systems.”The MAX2992 G3-PLC baseband modem is the optimum part for lighting-automation systems like the TLACS. The device provides leading performance through advanced features that address the range, data rate, noise immunity, and routing requirements of lighting automation. Modulation using DBPSK, DQPSK, and D8PSK, along with two layers of error correction enable reliable communication at data rates up to 300kbps. A robust mode maintains communication even when SNR is -1dB. Integrated routing and association support MESH networking, allowing the MAX2992 to extend range by forwarding messages to distant lamps. The IPv6-compatible networking layer of the device simplifies system integration, and its adaptive tone-mapping avoids frequencies with interference to maintain an optimal data rate. Additionally, the MAX2992 has worldwide compliance with licensed bands and conformance with IEEE(R) P1901.2 prestandard, assuring worldwide compatibility. To view demonstrations of the innovations from Maxim and Nyx Hemera Technologies, please visit the Maxim booth (#3351) at LIGHTFAIR International at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, PA. The exhibition runs from May 17 through May 19, 2011. For more information on Maxim’s PLC technology, please visit: www.maxim-ic.com/powerline. About Nyx Hemera TechnologiesFounded in 2008, Nyx Hemera Technologies uses cutting-edge technologies, such as powerline communications, that allow bidirectional transmissions on existing cables. This technology, integrated within the expert functions of the tunnel lighting control system, ensures a reliability, stability, and operational efficiency that are second-to-none. The TLACS boasts unique functions, such as the individual addressing of each luminaire, which helps to adjust brightness in tunnel entrances according to exterior lighting; and a preventive maintenance program, which generates complete diagnostics, such as the age of each luminaire. What’s more: the TLACS adapts to any road lighting, thus reducing operational costs, increasing security, and helping to support sustainable development.
