Date Announced: 24 May 2011 Enfield, NH and Burlington, VT - Leading Edge Design Group, a leading national provider of energy optimization services, announced today the completion of an energy efficient LED lighting upgrade for City Market/Onion River Co-op. Located in Burlington, Vermont, the LED lighting upgrade will drastically reduce City Market’s lighting operating and maintenance costs and save approximately 100,000 kWh of energy per year and over 64 tons of carbon.City Market selected the LED-based Intelligent Lighting System from Digital Lumens to replace aging, 400-Watt metal halide fixtures installed throughout the facility. ElectraLED was selected for the LED track lighting upgrade and motion-controlled LED freezer lighting. The Digital Lumens System integrates high-intensity LEDs and system-wide intelligence to maximize light output and delivery, while minimizing energy use. With a built-in, wireless controls system, the Digital Lumens System gathers data about lighting energy consumption, reports on kWh use, and documents energy reduction.Burlington Electric Department provided an energy efficiency incentive on the basis of the energy savings, which enhanced the Co-op's return on investment. They also provide City Market continuous energy savings and financial data to help substantiate the projects.Additional benefits of the City Market/Onion River Co-op lighting retrofit are: -Increased lighting life cycle from 8,500 hours to 60,000 hours with the LED solutions, -Improved product presentation, produce and meat shelf life, and overall interior aesthetics, -And the elimination of produce and meat premature aging caused by the ultra-violet light spectrum and excessive lamp heat. “The lights have been very well received and the whole store has a whole new dynamic of brightness and colors,” stated Brent Demers, Facilities Manager, City Market/Onion River Co-op. “The only problem is dirt is more visible so we are cleaning the floors more often!”The LED lighting solution and wireless control system designed and installed by Leading Edge Design Group aligns with City Market’s long-term sustainability goals and benefits the food cooperative’s loyal patrons and dedicated employees.“We are extremely grateful for and proud of our partnership with City Market/Onion River Co-op and Burlington Electric Department,” said Gary Hubbard, Energy Efficiency Program Manager at Leading Edge Design Group. “The savings realized by City Market/Onion River Co-op from our ongoing work to reduce energy consumption will benefit the store and the overall Vermont community as they continue to invest in local products and support local companies.” ABOUT LEADING EDGE DESIGN GROUPLeading Edge Design Group is a leading national provider of energy optimization services that delivers significant energy savings to the public and private marketplaces through efficient data center designs and emerging LED lighting and wireless lighting control technologies.
