CeramCool Box for packing densities up to 100W/cm²: compact and efficient

May 31, 2011
Date Announced: 31 May 2011 The compact CeramCool Box is made for homogeneous and efficient cooling of packing densities up to 100W/cm². For example, with an edge length of just 16 x 40 x 40 mm it has a total cooling capacity of 1600W, which corresponds to a ther-mal capacity of 1200W. The maximum temperature of an LED is just 90°C with a coolant flow rate of 180l/h and an ambient and cooling water temperature of 30°C. The CeramCool Box offers unlimited scalability in every direction. The electric con-ductors are placed directly on the high-performance ceramic heat-sink and perma-nently connected to it without thermal barriers and without the risk of delamination. The chip can be directly bonded on the heat-sink, for example. Four symmetrically arranged spiral condensers with innovative flow paths ensure balanced cooling on the complete surface. The ceramic walls are merely 1mm thick. This enables the coolant to get closer to the heat source than any other concept with a comparably long system lifetime. The CeramCool Box uses Alunit, an aluminum nitride ceramic material with a ther-mal conductivity of ≥170W/mK. In combination with direct metalization for chip on heat-sink mounting, e.g. Ag/Pt, excellent heat transfer from the heat source to the coolant is guaranteed. The number of cooling water connections has been limited to just one inlet and outlet to simplify manageability. The ceramic high-performance heat-sink lets the user choose the coolant and allows for application in aggressive environments.
