Kyma, Veeco receive DOE funds for LED manufacturing equipment project

Kyma Technologies, Inc. and Veeco Instruments are teaming up on a next-generation LED manufacturing equipment development project, funded by a $4 million award from the US Department of Energy.

This award is part of a $14.8 million SSL R&D funding round from the DOE.

The project is aimed at lowering the manufacturing costs and improving the brightness and efficiency of LEDs by utilizing novel materials, substrates, and deposition technologies. Kyma Technologies' role will be to supply material and services to Veeco as part of this development project.

Kyma Technologies, Inc., a leading supplier of crystalline nitride semiconductor materials, is pleased to announce that it is teamed with Veeco Instruments in a next generation light emitting diode (LED) manufacturing equipment development project which was recently awarded $4 million in funding from the US Department of Energy.

Kyma’s materials product line is designed to enable better energy efficiency and overall performance of LEDs and power electronics, critical requirements for furthering growth in solid state lighting, solar, and several other green technology markets. In order for these materials to be accepted commercially there needs to be an appropriate process equipment infrastructure, which will be furthered by this project.

Veeco, which is one of the world’s leading providers of equipment to make LEDs, is receiving funding for a project targeted at lowering the manufacturing costs and improving the brightness and efficiency of LEDs by utilizing novel materials, substrates, and deposition technologies. Kyma Technologies, a leading provider of crystalline nitride semiconductor materials based in Raleigh, North Carolina, will be supplying material and services to Veeco as part of this development project.

On Tuesday June 7th, Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced nearly $15 million to support eight new research and development projects that will accelerate the development and deployment of high-efficiency solid-state lighting technologies like LEDs and OLEDs. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have the potential to be ten times more energy-efficient than conventional incandescent lighting and can last up to 25 times as long. The projects selected are located in four states across the country and are focused on advancing core R&D goals, developing new products, and expanding domestic manufacturing capacity to help the U.S. remain competitive in this growing technology market.

US Congressman David Price (4th District of North Carolina) said, “The Veeco and Kyma team’s project is an excellent example of a research investment that ensures our future economic competitiveness. This project and others like it show that the Triangle is again leading the way investing in job creation, furthering our nation’s energy independence, and moving us one step closer to a clean energy economy.”
