Before making his recommendation, DeJean spent time interviewing downtown merchants, civic leaders, and even the police. What came back was the collective community wanted uniform lighting for greater visibility, cost effectiveness, sustainability, and they wanted aesthetics that would complement the overall streetscape and character of the downtown area.DeJean then compared LED to HID and induction light sources and the manufacturers who made the products. He compared photometrics, technological accomplishments, design, and sustainability among other characteristics. As a result of his exhaustive research and comparisons, he chose and recommended the Providence(R) luminaire made by California based Architectural Area Lighting (AAL).Because East Lyme has a colorful history dating back to the 1600s, the traditional looks of AAL's Providence luminaire meshed perfectly with the colonial period look the community wanted to maintain. This luminaire's aesthetics, functionality, engineering, and sustainability made Providence the obvious choice, DeJean said.Now a work in progress, AAL has already provided 37 of its Providence LED luminaires, and shortly will be supplying more of its new designer solid-state lighting to complete East Lyme's downtown installation.
