East Lyme, CT looks at downtown in new light from Hubbell Lighting

Date Announced: 02 Sep 2011

Greenville, SC - Architectural Area Lighting a division of Hubbell Lighting, a market leader in innovative lighting technology, design, and manufacturing for over 120 years, has provided East Lyme, CT with its first outdoor area luminaires to incorporate powerful LED technology packaged in a designer housing.

A picturesque New England coastline community on Long Island Sound, just 10 miles west of Mystic, CT, East Lyme recently replaced outdated high-pressure sodium (HPS) cobra head luminaires in its downtown area with the latest in state-of-the-art LED outdoor lighting.

Due to a lot of confusion in the market place, Bill Scheer, East Lyme's Town Engineer, wanted to be sure that the right product containing the right technology would be selected. Given the town's needs other than energy efficiency, he brought in consultant Daryl DeJean of Emerging Technologies Associates (www.linkedin.com/in/daryldejean) at the start of the lighting replacement project to assist in the final choice.

Among East Lyme's top priorities was the ability to control illumination and use of made in America luminaries to keep jobs in the US. Before making his recommendation, DeJean spent time interviewing downtown merchants, civic leaders, and even the police. What came back was the collective community wanted uniform lighting for greater visibility, cost effectiveness, sustainability, and they wanted aesthetics that would complement the overall streetscape and character of the downtown area.

DeJean then compared LED to HID and induction light sources and the manufacturers who made the products. He compared photometrics, technological accomplishments, design, and sustainability among other characteristics. As a result of his exhaustive research and comparisons, he chose and recommended the Providence(R) luminaire made by California based Architectural Area Lighting (AAL).

Because East Lyme has a colorful history dating back to the 1600s, the traditional looks of AAL's Providence luminaire meshed perfectly with the colonial period look the community wanted to maintain. This luminaire's aesthetics, functionality, engineering, and sustainability made Providence the obvious choice, DeJean said.

Now a work in progress, AAL has already provided 37 of its Providence LED luminaires, and shortly will be supplying more of its new designer solid-state lighting to complete East Lyme's downtown installation. The new Providence luminaires offer higher performing LEDs in a decorative outdoor package that is customizable. Combining beam angle design that provides uniform low glare illumination with its exclusive MicroEmitter(TM) technology, AAL's Providence luminaires have already reduced East Lyme's downtown electrical costs for outdoor lighting by nearly 20%.

In addition to the impressive savings, the new outdoor lighting provides more illumination with better distribution, noted Scheer. With installation of 17 more Providence luminaires in September, our savings will multiply and our community of 18,000 will continue to enjoy all of the aesthetics, functionality, and financial advantages our new LED outdoor lighting provides, Scheer concluded.

The entire community is truly excited about the project and many storefronts have gone through a rebirth, demonstrating the need for energy saving projects that meet all of the above-mentioned advantages, Scheer and DeJean agreed.

According to DeJean, "what the community has done could become a template for other communities throughout New England and the country". This is a classic example of the desire for a new look, LED performance and energy savings, and maximizing financial benefits of stimulus funds to benefit the city, its residents, and the US taxpayer, DeJean concluded.
