Philips LED fixtures illuminate roundabout on busy A-road near Bristol

Date Announced: 01 Aug 2011 Philips demonstrates how local authorities can save energy, improve safety and reduce maintenance costs through LED lighting at the Hicks Gate roundabout in KenyshamBath and North East Somerset Council, United Kingdom –- Philips has worked with Bath and North East Somerset Council, to improve road safety, traffic congestion, and the movement of public transport at Hicks Gate roundabout in Keynsham. With local authorities under increased pressure to reduce energy consumption and costs, Philips applied its innovative LED technology to offer Bath and North East Somerset Council an energy-efficient solution, which would help to reduce maintenance costs, and improve road safety through bright white light – enhancing road-user experience at the Hicks Gate roundabout.Philips’ introduced the SpeedStar, incorporating LEDGINE. The modular concept of LEDGINE within SpeedStar gives it complete flexibility to light a scheme to the exact requirement thereby maximising energy savings. This is especially useful when using existing spacings, as there is no need to over light, which sometimes is the case with step changes in HID lamp wattages. LEDGINE has a range of five patented optics to give different lighting distributions. Using the SpeedStar LED choice and lighting distributions an optimum solution was found whereby the same luminaire can be used for the road and for the roundabout, but with different optics. The SpeedStar luminaire also included integral Dynadimmer, a pre-programmed ‘fit and forget’ multi level dimming module to further enhance the energy saving potential of the new lighting system, creating energy savings of 58% against the old SON scheme. An additional benefit of the SpeedStar is the longer lifetime of LED lighting, which will help minimise maintenance needs. SpeedStar has a long lifetime of 60.000 hours, thereby reducing the maintenance and replacement required by traditional lighting. This will not only help to reduce costs for Bath and North East Somerset Council but it will also minimise the inconvenience experienced by road users on this busy stretch of the A4. The bright white light delivered by SpeedStar means that the new LED lighting scheme will maximise visibility for road users, increase reaction time, and therefore help improve safety for drivers. This makes SpeedStar a complimentary tool for traffic management, and a perfect solution for Bath and North East Somerset Council at the Hicks Gate roundabout.Keith Showering, Team Leader Highway Electrical and ITS, Environmental Services, Bath & North East Somerset Council, explained: “Philips’ specialist application of LED technology meant that Bath and North East Somerset Council were able to save energy and reduce maintenance costs without compromising on light quality or driver safety. SpeedStar was at the core of a Philips lighting scheme that improved the experience of road users at the Hicks Gate roundabout.”Philips is able to provide a range of innovative outdoor lighting solutions which increase energy efficiency while at the same time provide a lighting strategy for accident prevention and security.
