Nualight LED lighting to transform 800 co-op stores in UK

Aug. 9, 2011
Date Announced: 09 Aug 2011 Tuesday, August 9, 2011: Nualight, a leading specialist in LED lighting for food retail, has further consolidated its global leadership with a multi-million pound deal whereby its LED lighting technology will be implemented in freezers and ice-cream cabinets across 800 co-operative stores in the UK.

Nualight’s Porto lighting will be installed in the doors in low-temperature merchandising cabinets and its Alto canopy lighting will be installed in ice-cream display cabinets across co-operative stores. As with all Nualight LED lighting, Porto and Alto have been designed specifically to reduce energy consumption for retailers but also to create unrivaled high-impact food displays in terms of brightness and colour vibrancy.

Dr Liam Kelly, CEO of Nualight, described the deal as another significant piece of business for Nualight and a successful result for The Co-operative Group. “Our lighting delivers significant energy savings of over 70% when compared with fluorescent technology and it is also maintenance-free. We’re delighted that our technology can play an important part in The Co-Operative Group’s ambitious ethos of responsible retailing. Even more importantly, we hope that The Co-Operative Group will experience the same positive sales effect that our lighting has produced for our other retail customers across the globe.”

Nualight’s LED lighting technology is designed to significantly boost the visual impact of food displays, with the objective of attracting additional footfall by making food displays look brighter, fresher and more colourful. The food retail industry in the UK has already transitioned to doors on frozen food displays as an energy saving measure and is beginning to apply the same measure to chillers. However, this has led to problems with dark spots across the face of food displays where the light cannot reach. Nualight’s Porto door lighting is proven to produce exceptionally bright and uniform lighting for freezers and chillers with doors. For high-margin food displays such as ice cream and luxury desserts, it is vital that the lighting also brings out the richness of colour in the packaging. Nualight’s Alto canopy lighting delivers exceptionally high CRI (colour-rendering index), boosting colour vibrancy in the products on display.

“The motivation for introducing Nualight’s LED lighting solutions to our stores,” according to Alex Pitman, Energy and Carbon Manager at The Co-operative Group, “arose primarily from our unique commitment to sustainable retailing practices. Nualight’s LED lighting will significantly reduce the energy consumption of our freezers and ice-cream cabinets while generally improving brightness and colour to better showcase our frozen food products. We are confident the new lighting will increase customer footfall to these displays.”

The Co-operative Group has over 3,000 food stores and supermarkets around the UK. The Group focuses on quality with honest, ethically sourced products and has an ambitious Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. A survey in 2008 found The Co-operative to be Britain’s greenest supermarket.

Protecting the environment by reducing energy consumption is a key element of The Co-operative's Ethical Plan, which includes the toughest carbon reduction targets of any major business in the UK.

The Nualight transaction with The Co-operative follows a similar Nualight deal with Tesco in the UK last year as well as with the ‘Fresh N Easy’ chain of stores in the US. Other European retailers who are benefiting from Nualight’s LED technology and expertise include Morrisons, M&S, Sainsbury’s, Migros, Tengelmann and Coop Switzerland. Nualight offers the most versatile LED lighting in the industry, working with retailers and merchandisers to tailor lighting according to the brand image, store format, case type and colours/textures of food on display. Nualight has the largest installed base of horizontal LED lighting globally and is successfully rolling out its products in 20 countries with major global retail players such as Tesco (Europe), Ahold (US) and Coles (Australia).

Nualight is the only LED lighting company in the world that specialises exclusively in lighting of food retail displays. Led by Dr. Liam Kelly, a leading authority in LED lighting, Nualight is funded by Climate Change Capital, ESB Novus Modus, 4th Level Ventures and the Quinn retail dynasty. This unique combination of LED technology, cleantech expertise and food retail experience makes Nualight a powerful partner for retailers who wish to drive footfall to their food displays while delivering on their sustainability agenda.
