Philips earns eight LED design competition awards

Date Announced: 07 Mar 2011

Furthering its reputation as one of the industry’s leading developers of LED technology, Philips earned more honors – eight! – than any other manufacturer at the third annual Next Generation™ Luminaires (NGL) awards ceremony at the recent Strategies in Light Conference.

Winning one of the four “Best in Class” awards was Philips Color Kinetics, for its eW Burst Powercore façade lighting fixture. The judges were very impressed with the lighting effects and efficiency of the eW Burst Powercore, which is a high-output, exterior-rated LED luminaire designed for highlighting architectural elements. "Tremendous throw for only 30W," "excellent narrow beam," and "excellent coverage and control" were all included in individual judging comments.

Earning “Recognized” or “Notable” status were seven Philips products:

· Recognized: Calculite LED Downlight , Alcyon LED Cylinder and Vetro LED PM Series (all from Philips Lightolier); Revelation LED Downlight (Philips Omega); LED Dock Light (from Philips Day-Brite); and RoadStar (from Philips Roadway).

· Notable: HIBRED HID/LED Low-Level Ambient Lighting System (Philips Wide-Lite).

The NGL competition was launched in 2008 to promote excellence in the design of energy‐efficient LED luminaires for general illumination in commercial lighting applications. It is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, and the International Association of Lighting Designers.

A Philips spokesperson is available to provide more details about the award winners – but perhaps more importantly, can provide an overview of Philips’ ongoing leadership in the emerging LED lighting space.

As you may know, Philips is the undisputed leader in LED based lighting solutions. In recent years, Philips has invested more than $4.4 billion on LED lighting acquisitions and research to help ensure its ongoing LED technology leadership. Philips was recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy for achievements in Solid State Lighting research and development. Its new consumer LED products have the same technology used to light the large numerals and dazzling ball used at the New Year’s Event in Times Square.
